Geertruida

He's obviously a good player, but I think people are going over the top.

He's put in some good performances, but some average ones too. He's also failed to secure a starting spot in both of his recent moves.

I'd prefer a quality midfielder Regis trusts. I think he as always seen Gerty as an understudy centre back.
It’s an interesting thought that’s been on my mind since the news broke. I’m absolutely certain that we can get a better centre half than LG, or midfielder or fullback. What’s tough is to get that in one player. Realistically we’ll need to recruit a couple to do it, and that may not be doable this window. But the question of Reg and trust is an interesting one. He picks an XI and then sticks with it. He’s not a big user of subs. All adds up to versatility being important to us, perhaps at the expense of outright mastery of one single position. Maybe we have more talent by replacing LG with multiple players, but then the challenge is one of squad harmony and finance. Tough for the club to balance.

It's a fair point mind. He absolutely should have played more than Hume.

That's not a dig before anyone starts, Geertruida is just better and Liverpool wanting him in to play RB primarily says it all on that one.

Can't blame the lad for wanting away in a World Cup year when Slot comes calling for him again and at Liverpool, when he is not a first choice player here, but regardless of all of that he was ours until the summer if we wanted to keep him and everyone involved (player, Leipzig and Liverpool) should have been told to suck it up.

This "do right by the player" stuff was understandable in the Championship but not so much when we in the PL ourselves and especially not when it involves a player who covers so many positions for us and again when Xhaka is still out for weeks.

Are we expecting Liverpool might do us a favour in the future, because let's be honest, they absolutely won't.
He hasn't been though. Not for us. Hume had the shirt first, has had a generally good season at right back, and when Geertruida has had the odd opportunity at right back, he hasn't done enough to force his way in.

Geertruida is an excellent squad player to have, I expected him to establish himself in the first team, but I've not seen much to suggest he's going to be a class right back at Premier League level.

Good player, but we're never going to be buying £20m, £80k+ a week depth players. Not a long term fit for a club like us currently.

He's a very good player who should have been a regular. Regis isn't great at squad management and rotation, I believe he has said himself he struggles to work with players outside his starting 11.
He’s very versatile and undoubtedly a good player but he’s not a better RB than Mukiele, better CB than Alderete, LB than Reinildo or CM than Xhaka from what we’ve seen. Consequently it’s difficult to argue he should be a regular despite his quality.

Geertruida hasn't been able to make a slot in the 1st team his ....
Hes looked good at the back and always does a job... but weve been stacked in the middle to the point where weve needed to ditch neil ... the likes of poveda etc have got a chance of 1st team football

The question really is at what point has this this scenario really taken shape .. before west ham?
I think its a stretch to say we're stacked in the middle. We needed back up for xhaka even before geertruida news came about. Now its essential. Le bris clearly just doesn't rate dan neil as a PL player.

And poveda? Come on man.

The Lucumi talk has never really gone away. Probably be back in for him again I suspect.
Would probably make sense. Although Lucumi is primarily a lcb he looks perfectly capable of covering both sides. For me, Geerty looked completely at sea when asked to play on the left side.

£10m compo for a loan player who has never been our player is outstanding business in anyones book mate.

As we had an agreement to sign him for circa £20m, if he is now worth more than that we should be entitled to a cut as well as compensation for the premature ending of the loan deal. His value has only risen because he played for us in the PL. Leipzig considered him a flop.
Been reported we are looking at £3m compensation.

looks like its not a sale to Liverpool...they just want to take on the loan until the end of the season ? so we are not standing in his way of a permanent move..it would be cover an injury

maybe we can do a deal get a winger back in return on loan?

He's a better centre half or midfielder, than right back for me. Seems a few all in a panic, when our recruitment team deserve the opportunity to see how this plays out.

Downie saying defender. The other fella saying midfielder.

We really really need a midfielder.
Really need both imo. A Mukiele injury would have us in a lot of trouble at the back as well. Ideal thing with Geertruida is that we could gamble on not having a defence and midfield injury crisis at the same time. Or obviously someone else that can cover both but not sure how many CB/RB/CDM hybrids are out there, available, and as good as Geertruida.
