Thank you Dan Neil

Hope that works.
Thankyou.
Will go down as a Sunderland legend. Shields boy who picked us up by our bootstraps when we lay dying in the trenches of League 1, took us through two divisions, captained us back to the Prem. People like me dad thought they’d never live to see it, and for that I’ll be forever grateful.
He's from Jarra like.

Wish him well. 3 players to fondly follow in the Championship now

Forum is a bit gushing mind

Now questioning why the head coach, captain and owner haven't paid their own personal tributes?

He had cramp and was visibly suffering 2nd half, could barely move.

Having watched it back since where initially I thought we were dreadful first half, Neil was the only central midfielder getting on the ball, keeping it moving and spreading play. He didn't control things by any means, but also didn't play badly at all 1st half when United were trying to suffocate us in midfield and Enzo couldn't get on the ball.

People only seem to remember how it ended and that it changed. But it only changed as United tired, had to take Hamer off and it left space for Roberts, Watson and Le Fee further back now had the space to play in without the same level of intensity and physicality they wouldn't have faced earlier.

Just amazing how few people could not see he was dead on his feet after chasing Hamer around, and he was their stand out player.
They both left the game at roughly the same time , both players spent.
It was the foundation for us going in to win the game, not a weakness we fixed.
There was a so called Sunderland fan couple of rows behind me at some point shouted Neil your a coward in first half … i couldn’t believe at that moment in time that could be the first thought of a Sunderland fan.

Jealousy, and irrational hate from some very troubled and nasty people

First class t…s

He was f***ing shite for 50% of his games here man, even struggled in some league one games, people have short memories. I remember all the Dan Neil weekly shit threads on here man, take the local lad blinkers off he is no where near good enough even for the championship he struggled badly at times in the promotion season even being subbed off at times, glad we are shot of shite like him, take Ipswich fans 5 games max before they realise he is shite as well, signing him probably fucked their promotion up!
He did get a lot of stick you’re right but you have to realise football supporters are mostly thick as fuck regarding football.

Neil was far more good than bad, probably not premier league standard but a great servant none the less.

Hamer off 72. Neil off 73 - no coincidence.

I love Enzo but there's no way Enzo is being that disciplined centrally chasing Hamer around at the level of fitness he had at that point.

Of course though the positive outcome is down to just Neil being subbed 🥴

Yeah I don't get some of the vitriol. Many SAFC fans suggest that local lads get more leeway. I think once they've been here a while they often get under appreciated and are easier targets - I've never seen any abuse like what Richard Ord got under Butcher when he was actually playing well.

Dicky ord did become a boo boy, don’t think he ever fully established himself until Reidy got hold of him. Had two excellent seasons then.

Yeah he had a bad period especially around Bristol City game where it was often said (by some) he feigned injury to get taken off.

But he came back in under Crosby and played ok central midfield very briefly then even though he was never a left back played there and done reasonably well under Butcher and I'd never witnessed any player at Roker get the level of abuse he did one night against Wolves.

About a season later he began to play again in central defence under Buxton as Buxton was the actual first manager to play Ball in midfield, but didn't stick to it and then Ord was back out again. That kinda lined up nicely for Reid coming in and chucking Ord and Mickey Gray back in when both had limited game time under Buxton.

Ya know what ya one of the few who remembers it was Buxton who played ball in midfield. Reid always gets credited with that one.

I think Crosby tried him right back given we had a few centre backs - Butcher may have briefly played him there too. But yeah Reidy got the credit for pushing him into midfield- I'm not sure though If I've heard Bally himself say he played midfield at Pompey occasionally.

He may have at pompey but was always centre half from memory with us until Buxton tried him.

I said he had contributed to the foundation to allow us to go on and win.

The foundation being we had tired them out, ground them down and stayed in the game.

The actual winning of the game was down to others

The winning of the game was done over the entirety of it, pretty much a team effort. Not just after 73 mins.

Without the foundation - there is no win.

I’m sure he played Ball in midfield against Portsmouth to mark Alan McLoughlin.
