Raheem Sterling - leaving Chelsea? Arrested?

I know it's not unusual for "top" clubs to pay £50m for players, along with a fortune in wages and fees, to get nowt back, but he's spent a long time there doing nowt for it.

Not that it would ever happen but it would have to be on pay as you play until the end of the season for nothing more than £25k ish a week

Only then would it even be worth considering the gamble

Chelsea letting him go as a free agent by all accounts
Either paying all his contract up early or his agent has something lined up and he’ll just take a percentage and somebody else will pay the rest. He won’t be down a penny that’s for sure, like I said earlier he’s got no reason to leave, he won’t be back in the England squad and won’t to a club challenging for anything if he stays in London.

He's gone by Mutual Consent according to the BBC

There must be something missing from this story... nobody in his position would just give away the rest of such a lucrative contract. As @FoldingStars says he must have something lined up already on the basis that Chelsea take a bit of a hit with a payment to him to end the contract and he gets a contract elsewhere which basically means he's not out of pocket and has an opportunity to play.

Rules most clubs out then as he will be after hundreds of thousands a week. At least a loan, Chelsea could have covered most the wages.
Absolutely no way he walked away without Chelsea paying him off, he has 27 million reasons not to. Probably got £20m and will sign with somebody on an 18 month deal for 50k a week meaning he loses out on about £4m but he can make that in the 18 months from his pay off.

Footballers may not be the most sensible people when it comes to money but agents and advisors are, if he’s walks away with nothing his agent has lost out on £2m+ no way he’s allowing that.

I’d take him on an 18 month deal for 50k a week like.
