Raheem Sterling - leaving Chelsea? Arrested?

There must be something missing from this story... nobody in his position would just give away the rest of such a lucrative contract. As @FoldingStars says he must have something lined up already on the basis that Chelsea take a bit of a hit with a payment to him to end the contract and he gets a contract elsewhere which basically means he's not out of pocket and has an opportunity to play.
They may have settled at a %

We pay you 60% now or you stay and sit on your arse for another year?

May also mean they take the financial hit immediately, in a year they think they have headroom?

He's on so much money no one would take him.

So for Chelsea it's come to an agreement over his release, or pay him £325k per week for the next 18 months and get absolutely nothing in return.

This way Chelsea can cut their losses and the player can find a new club. He won't be able to get anywhere near the wages he would have done staying at Chelsea, but now with a chunk of his Chelsea wages already in the bank, he only needs to make up the difference.

If his wage demands are now more in line with the dramatic fall in his standing and reputation, there will be plenty of clubs willing to take a risk, especially if he's willing to start with a short term contract.

He does after all have over 80 England caps and 4 Premier League medals, and he's only 31. Plenty of clubs will fancy they are the ones to get the best out of him once again, though personally I don't see that happening.

Rules most clubs out then as he will be after hundreds of thousands a week. At least a loan, Chelsea could have covered most the wages.
About 10 years ago or so he’d end up at stoke or West Ham or Palace. Wages at top 6 clubs are so astronomical now so where do these players go? Saudi or somewhere?

Money aside it's absolutely pointless anyone signing him now expecting him to have an impact this season. He's not kicked a ball in nearly 2 years.

Even if things go spectacularly well he'll be nowhere near fit until he's had a preseason and on a level playing field with everyone else

I'd be amazed if any premier league side took him on. Watching him trying to get going for Arsenal last season was painful. Was class at one point but that is all in the distant past.

The story in the media last summer was that he was willing to take a drop in wages but told Chelsea he would only leave to join another London club as his family are really happy there and he won't move them

I always found him a strange sort of player. Effective at running fast at defences, causing a nuisance, winning fouls, but in terms of passing, creating chances in open play, finishing/shooting I always found him poor.

He's 31 and he has had a two year lay off with a knee injury which rather sadly suggests that he is unlikely to ever be the player that he once was. I doubt he would hold his own in the Premier League.

If he's looking to stay in London may be one of the Championship Clubs (Charlton QPR Millwall) would give him ago until the end of the season. If he does there will be a lot of pressure /expectation on him from the fans to be a game changer which isn't really what he needs.

The BBC is reporting it as:

"Sterling will receive a payout from , while the club will save money as the settlement will be less than the figure of over £20m he would have been paid had he stayed for the remaining year and a half of his contract."

I'd rather have Bali Mumba and Gooch both on fire for Huddersfield with ten men to beat the Mighty Luton this week....Lol....😅

It's a No from me for any of our ex players and indeed a Big No for Slow Sterling....🤗
Goochy is class and great to hear he's smashing up league 1. To be completely frank, Gooch would probably put out a better performance than Sterling would in a Sunderland shirt.

Nothing would make me happier than discovering Gooch had found a pair of magic 'Dead Shot Keen' boots, and was ready to come back and rip up the Premier League.

Great attitude, and loved the club.
