I know it’s a bit of a cliche but I think the next 7 days could dictate how our season goes.
If we beat Burnley at home next week it will still be 2 wins in 3. All teams around us, even the top ones, are dropping points. Chelsea lost the other week, Liverpool drew with Burnley, Man Utd drew 3 in a row before last weekend. Mags drew with Wolves. Brentford lost the last match.
6 points out of 9 would be a good return and meant that we had done something neither Man Utd or Liverpool have done in the last few weeks in beating Burnley.
At the same time we have the window where the issue and opportunity are glaringly obvious.
Goalkeeper is sorted. Defence is largely sorted (Unless Hume plays like today regularly and then we need Mukiele there and another CB). Midfield is sorted. Brobbey is currently scoring every game. We could strengthen all of those positions but without major injuries should be ok and we have the spine of a top 10 team IMO. We lack quality on the wings.
Spend any money we have on the wings and another striker in the Brobbey mould. If we get a decent offer for Isidor I’d take it as with PSR and / or if we play the loan market with buy options in the summer like last season we could bring in 2 or 3 that could transform our attack.
Honestly think our season is at a cross roads in the next week. Win against Burnley and bring in 2 wingers and a striker and we would be right in amongst it. Don’t beat Burnley and go into the second half like this and we might keep slipping.
Worst case if Brobbeys goals dry up and we defend like today it will be a long time until May.
Not so sure our season is at a crossroads mate, far from it we have basically achieved the pre season aim of staying up, and done it instyle, we can go into second half and enjoy it, maybe experiment with players and formations with no real pressure, start planning for next season and improving, remember were we have come from.
The squad we have has managed to bounce back after negative results, be great to see Diarra our main summer signing slot into an already decent midfield and get some game time, great if we can bring in a couple of players who have the qualities to improve the squad.
So many established teams are underachieving and they really are at a crossroads of relegation or changing managers the likes of Wolves, West Ham, Forrest, Palace, Spurs, Chelsea, Newcastle and even Liverpool have all been underwhelming and will be unhappy with their league positions.
