Becoming an Established Premier League Club

Absolutely. The crowds would likely go down a bit, if that was the case as well.
Those who didn’t attend in L1 or The Championship are riding int he crest of a wave at present but have shown they aren’t really up for anything less.

thats why i'm enjoying it so much now, as i know first hand how shite it has been for 8-10 years.

but it suits us being the underdog for once, the last few years we've been a big scalp generally

we saw on saturday just gone, probably the first time this season there was a lot of people expecting a routine win, which doesn't suit us as a club at all

next season there will be 5-6 of these games at least, where we are turning up expecting a win and where we'll be disappointed with anything less. it really isn't going to suit us

as much as i hate to say it, the visitors up the road absolutely feed off this 'us against the world' type of situation. as soon as they are playing a run of the mill team where they are favourites to win, they lose a bit of that bite. thats what will come with being an established, mid table side.

fulham fans, brighton fans, bournemouth fans, brentford fans... with no disrespect to them, seem to handle being middle-of-the-road a lot better than some of the more fanatical fan bases

excatly.

it won't be all of the fans. might not even be the majority. but it will be a loud sub-section of our support who say things like

'i know we are safe with 20 games to go, but we can't just keep saying that we have over-acheived due to us being in the championship a year or two ago, now is the time to kick on not consolidate due to X, Y, Z reasons... KLD needs to put his hand in his pocket or sell to someone who will, we have an opportunity to challenge the top 4 here''

whilst we are sitting in a boring 11th place
Correct. This is why they will hold off on extending the ground. In 3 years time, ill demand still be the same of we are 12th?

People also stupidly think you should improve league position every year, as if thats in any way realistic.

Spot-on. Murray extended early, thinking we would always sell-out after a couple of 7th place finishes.
I think this lot are far more pragmatic in that respect. As you say, give it 3 or so years and see how the land lies. Hopefully we are regular. Top 8 or so but, if not, see what demand is like as history tells us, there’ll be a slight drop-off.
From a purely selfish point of view (obviously I want us to be as high as possible every single season), if that happens, I’ll be back full-time.

Ageeed.

You'll even see peaks of it next week if we don't beat West Ham. It'll be "we should be winning games like that if we are serious about getting into Europe" and "we need to attack and try to score, we are too defensive".

Might even see a cheeky "take the handbrake off"

Hate to say I told you so ......

Saw an interesting statistic the other day which outlined that 47% of newly promoted teams end up getting relegated in their first PL season.

Of the newly promoted teams that do stay up in their first season, only 11% subsequently get relegated in season 2, which shows you've got a very strong chance of getting to season 3 and well on your way to establishing yourself as a feature at that level given the advantage you have over the upcoming promoted sides at the very least.

Still early days in the Championship and a lot to play for, but at the moment the 3 coming up could be Coventry, Boro and Ipswich who would obviously start a million miles behind us in terms of squad talent, finances, ability to attract players, etc.

There's teams like Palace and Bournemouth who have lost key players and/or a manager, and sides like Leeds and Forest who (if they stay up), with respect, are probably going to be in the mix at the bottom half of the table too.

My only slight concern is that players like Roefs and Sadiki will already attract serious interest in the summer based on their performances this season. We'd obviously bring in massive money if they were to go and you'd be foolish to back against us replacing them well, but if we could hold on to our core 15-ish players and add 2-3 players of next level quality, the sky could be the limit.

Not to take anything for granted mind as we're all long enough in the tooth to know how quickly things can go wrong, but it just feels like everything is lining up really nicely for us to become a real fixture at this level. God knows we deserve it!

Can't believe we're looking ahead to next season, in January mind. What an unreal season we have had

The major potential problem for us is that a few of this season's team could well be gone by the time season 26/27 begins.

When have we ever had that worry 🤣.

Seriously though, the players like Roefs, Alderete, Sadiki, Muks and Brobbey may well love it here, but once bigger clubs get in to their agents ears, it's game over and things can therefore, change very quickly.

Trying to get like for like quality replacements is what every club strives for but few actually achieve, so becoming blase about things is a very dangerous game.

Didnt expect it would be a cup defeat that saw the dam burst, but there we go. RLB out is now a thing.

If we are going to be as professional as we think we are, this is an embarrassing wake-up call. Weak squad, poor approach, players suspended sometimes unnecessarily, but we should have had enough.

It appears that we have been over-relying on Roefs, Mukuele, Ballard, Xhaka and Brobbey. Take that spine out of the team and we have still managed to perform in the league temporarily, but little Port Vale have found us out in the Cup.

The Brighton match will be interesting.

This is worrying especially as we try to become a more established club in the Prem.

Can’t say the players not mentioned but who you mean haven’t had chances. Today was a great opportunity and for much of it we just sulked about the pitch. Pathetic.

Judging by the pea sized hearts on display today, we could well be one of the 11% next season
Well done Port Vale they did what we did many times in 73 a bad day at the office foe Reggie and his defensive minded tactics but a good day for Port Vale. I'm consoling myself with the fact that Port Vale will be drawn against either Man City or Arsenal but good luck to them.

My sentiments exactly

People wanting him sacked now
i bet you £100 that next season if we go out of both cups early on, and are hanging around mid-table with no threat of relegation but no consistency to challenge the top 8, that by February there'll be a decent amount of fans that start getting tetchy, restless and impatient. and that will transfer into the SoL on a matchday. its the modern world, we see it up the road and with most clubs in the premier league, the fans start booting off the second things aren't exciting
It's happening.

Seeing a lot of posts lately asking how likely it is that we'd go straight back down next season, so thought this was worth a bump.
