Becoming an Established Premier League Club

Saw an interesting statistic the other day which outlined that 47% of newly promoted teams end up getting relegated in their first PL season.

Of the newly promoted teams that do stay up in their first season, only 11% subsequently get relegated in season 2, which shows you've got a very strong chance of getting to season 3 and well on your way to establishing yourself as a feature at that level given the advantage you have over the upcoming promoted sides at the very least.

Still early days in the Championship and a lot to play for, but at the moment the 3 coming up could be Coventry, Boro and Ipswich who would obviously start a million miles behind us in terms of squad talent, finances, ability to attract players, etc.

There's teams like Palace and Bournemouth who have lost key players and/or a manager, and sides like Leeds and Forest who (if they stay up), with respect, are probably going to be in the mix at the bottom half of the table too.

My only slight concern is that players like Roefs and Sadiki will already attract serious interest in the summer based on their performances this season. We'd obviously bring in massive money if they were to go and you'd be foolish to back against us replacing them well, but if we could hold on to our core 15-ish players and add 2-3 players of next level quality, the sky could be the limit.

Not to take anything for granted mind as we're all long enough in the tooth to know how quickly things can go wrong, but it just feels like everything is lining up really nicely for us to become a real fixture at this level. God knows we deserve it!

Can't believe we're looking ahead to next season, in January mind. What an unreal season we have had :lol:

We won't be a surprise package next season so that may have am impact.

I'm not sure the sky is the limit. Will take some doing breaking into the top 4 bracket.

Where it becomes an issue is when you are a team that isn't going to be relegated but can't challenge at the top. Then fans get a bit restless or things can become stale.

Next challenge is if/how we go about becoming a littke more creative in an attacking sense, without jeopardising what has got us comfortable already, which is being solid defensively and very hard to beat. We already have fans on here wanting more creativity and more goals.

Very early doors, but at least the objective for this season is achieved. Which is fantastic.

We’ve been told the model is to produce real talent, sell, then repeat.
That suggests players like Sadiki and Roeffs will be off.
However if KLD can see the potential in this group of players (with a couple of top drawer additions in the summer), it would make sense to keep them together next season and shoot for the top!

I reckon the big money bids won't come in (of they are to) until clubs have season if the players can do it more consistently. Don't think one season alone is proof of that. We shouldn't be in a hurry to offload just yet either. Use those players and our successes as a pull to attract better players.

As if going to Anfield, the Emirates, Old Trafford as opposed to the Kassam stadium, Deepdale, KCOM stadium could ever define staleness :lol:
 
Presently there are only 9 points between 6th and 16th which shows that the middle ground has widened and the bottom part narrowed so that a lot of teams in the middle part have similar ability to beat others and could finish anywhere near the top or bottom of it.
Next season a poor start like Wolves could put us or others under pressure so I hope we lose non of our main squad and if possible supplement it with a bit more offensive quality.

We already aren't a surprise package and teams are more cautious with us. Hasn't stopped us though.

Do agree on people antsy about 'pushing on' though.
 
It's easy. Just spend a shit load of cash and have the best transfer window in your clubs history, and you too can become an established Premier League Club.

Nah, get what you're saying, but whilst teams will take more note as the season progresses, in general you still are a bit of surprise package for each until they actually play you. It's why some teams deemed one season wonders have a difficult following season. Not saying that'll happen to us mind but we shall see.

Yep. Doesn't matter what league you're in, fans will eventually always want to see progress and is where some can get restless or things become more stale. We've already threads about atmospheres dropping off and several have said because we are in no man's land, not going to go down but not going to be challenging.

FWIW I think this season has been amazing, and remains very exciting.

In my 50 years supporting the club, the only time i can compare this to is when Reid was here and we got promoted for the 2nd time under him in 1999.

Obviously we had two 7th place finishes in a row before it started going pear shaped.

The main reason it went pear shaped is because the recruitment in his last few transfer windows was shocking.

You just can't see that happening this time as long as everyone behind the scenes at the club remains in place.

Our transfer policy, in the main, has been excellent these last few years.
 
Depends which clubs get promoted but if for example it’s Coventry, Ipswich and Birmingham. I would expect Ipswich to have learnt a lesson from last time and be more competitive and Birmingham will spend a shit load on players.

You can expect 1 newly promoted team only to be relegated and but for a club like us, don't make any assumptions like a lot of teams will have done in the past.

99% of non SAFC fans and pundits expected us to get relegated. Clubs like West Ham and Wolves have been caught out by this. Make sure it isn’t us next season.

Nobody is a surprise package anymore them days are gone. Every club has there own data/analysis team every little detail is measured now in the modern game nothing is left to chance.

Before we played Bournemouth Regis did a interview saying in his weekly game prep he had watched Bournemouth last 4 full games and then has his staff and then the analysis team aswell all feeding bits aswell. We aren’t a surprise package this season we just have a really good solid team that gets results
 
How do we generate cash to invest in players. How do we develop players in an environment where we always need to be generating results. How do we keep the fans engaged when we start bumping into the ceiling. How we answer these questions will determine whether we can genuinely establish ourselves as a PL club - and reduce/remove the threat of being one bad season from the championship.
 
While it's inevitable that some of our signings will attract interest from other clubs and at some point, some will move on, you can also look at clubs like Brighton, Brentford and Fulham as comparisons. They've been in the league a number of seasons and lost players to top 6 sides but they've managed to replace them and consolidate their position. Hopefully our recruitment system will continue to find a similar level of replacements for those that we lose

Disagree, in relative terms. Basically a brand new eleven and a rejuvenated SoL crowd. Until teams land here they don't appreciate it. And they've been rattled.

I'm not saying analysis isn't done, players completely unheard of etc like "the olden days".

It's really difficult to see what the right strategy is, but I'm sure someone who knows more about football than me is working on it within the club.

The fans want progress, but:
1. You get into Europe and your squad is too small and league form suffers
2. You develop players and Man City swoop in and take them and your league form suffers
3. You focus on the league and a decent cup run, players that are ambitious look to leave

What's the right balance and a good outcome?
