Looking for some advice - not much of a runner (at all) but have recently started to experience a lot of discomfort in my right foot when running. Tends to start with a bit of tightness in the calf, then down into the heel / ball of foot then full on numbness about 20 minutes in. Have tried loosening laces etc. Think my left foot is slightly bigger than the right as the right shoe tends to feel slightly too slack but it's the right foot that goes numb as if the pressure is too tight which seems odd. Had these shoes about a year but only started to experience this in the past couple of months, and only go short distances a couple of times a week so still in very good condition.

Anyone experienced similar? Or know anywhere in Sunderland where you can get measured properly?
I don’t know the answer to your issue but I’d recommend seeking professional help or at least seeking the help of a physio.

What trainers are you running in out of interest? Do you know your gait? Your foot strike?

Was away travelling then had flu when back

Ran 12km last night, so slow like, I reckon like 15 min slower

Will it take long to come back, think I maybe put on near a stone and it was a bit up hill.

You will get back, but how long will depend on you. My advices would be to get out on a regular basis, take it easy, get the miles back in your legs. Eventually start to include some short sprints in your normal run. The weight will come off - assuming you manage to burn more calories than you are taking in. There are lots of training programmes available on line - find one that suits you, but don't be a slave to it.
I have found the older I get the easier it is to lose fitness and the harder it is to get it back. Just have to be bloody minded and focused.

Run walk run from Jeff Galloway is something I followed when I returned to running in about 2023 after about 9 months off. Really good way of introducing pace, distance and not feeling overly fatigued.
 
Anyone doing Newcastle 10k tomorrow, been really motivated this year and been getting out and and just thinking let's just run for an hour and see how it goes

Most of my training runs when I was younger and competitive were not timed. I had a rough idea of the distance and sometimes I would just glance at the sitting room clock when I returned. Every single race I did, I never wore a watch - I instinctively knew how much to push and hurt myself.

An ex runner I know is still very fit, but is now gettin on a bit. No longer runs, but is still out most days walking distances and speeds that would be a lot for somebody half his age. He is also an ever present marshalling at local park run. He once advised me to occasionally forget my watch, but more importantly to forget the times I used to do as I get older. It's not so easy to do!

I normally run once a week. I did a shorter one on Friday - about 5. 5 miles, thought I was going well but I bet it was not much quicker than 8. 5 minutes per mile. Crazy. At least I felt as though I was moving and got a buzz. It is all relative. The important thing is to get out there, and keep going. Because I only run sparingly, I really enjoy it. In the past it was sometimes a case of dragging myself around and thinking, christ, I have to do this all again tomorrow and the day after. The ale tasted nice afterwards!
 
Not a runner by any means, but managed to do the 'Couch to 5k' at the start of last year. Although still going to gym I've not really ran since summer. Then drunkenly on NYE agreed to run every day in January with my mate (minimum 3k). 13 days in and gradually worked up to 4k daily. Average of 5:50 /km and really getting into it. Going to increase the distance at the weekend and will culminate in a park run.
Still going 19 days in. Onto a 4.8km route now. Found a natural pace which leaves me with enough in the tank for a final sprint. The little shin/calf niggles seem to have eased up now thankfully.
 
Think I'm gunna start mixing things up a bit and start doing some sprint training/intervals stuff, industrial estate where I work is flat and about 500m round so perfect for it. Generally just go out and run without much thought about it, but with all the extra mileage and long runs I've been doing the last year I'm not that far off where I was when I was in my 'prime' around 2019/2020. Feel like with a bit speed work I might able to get back where I was and maybe break some PBs.
 
Done nothing since late oct/early nov. Holidays then xmas, then ill (and just being lazy).
Got back on the indoor bike last week and been out for a 30min run/plod today to start building a base again. Can feel the "impact" in the legs/hips etc.
 
Managed to pick up a pair of Boston 12s for £80, gave them a blast today but the wind made things a bit counterproductive.

I'm in Malta over the derby weekend and have ended up signing up for a 10k event from Valetta while I'm over there. Was tempted by the HM and Full marathon events but didn't want to eat up too much of my holiday time.

I’m currently running races in metaspeed edge Paris, thinking of upgrading to the Tokyo’s for Elche HM but the difference between Edge and Sky is just mental to decide on which is better.

Apparently one is for those who increase cadence, one for those how lengthen stride. I do both apparently. Minefield.
