There's 3 options:
  • He's not good enough, that's 'slagging off Neil'.
  • He's not loyal and won't sign a contract, that probably is actually slagging off Neil.
  • The manager is clueless.
There's no 4th option so take a pick which one you go into but you've been slagging all 3 categories off...

You can't be good enough for the team and not be picked.

He didn’t shine though. He was mediocre, ALL season. And for those who argue he hasn’t had a chance, like Patto, there is a reason the club have bolstered their positions.

Dan Neil, like any other player, can't fall out with RLB over his contract, because it isn't RLB's' responsibility. Contracts and recruitment are down to Speakman (and Ghisolfe), although we know they value Regis' input on signings. If Dan Neil is unhappy with contract situation it would be KS he'd be falling out with.

That management structure is set up this way so that RLB as HC can focus on team matters, coaching players, tactics and gameplans, and not have to deal with contractual gripes. Regis doesn't really care about DN's contract situation. We've seen this last season with Tommy Watson. The fact that Tommy wouldn't sign a contract (which he knew all last season), and even when he had signed for Brighton, Regis still played him. RLB always gives the same answer when questioned by journo's on DN and others. He cannot be clearer: if a player is connected with the team, the squad, the project ... then they will be considered and played if needed.

DN has not started because he has (1) Xhaka, (2) Sadiki and (3) Geertrudia ahead of him. And Hume doing the hybrid CM-RB role on occasions we doesn't help. I don't think he's really a contender for Le Fee/Diarra's more advanced midfield role. Our summer recruitment has focused on more physical attributes of players, both physique - and energy/stamina. The fitness and availability of these stronger players is the reason Dan has had so little game time. That's not to say, he wouldn't have acquitted himself well and coped had he been called upon for a while. Such is the thankless life of many a player. Or understudy in theatrical terms.

We’re a stronger team without him the replacements are a different level to his capabilities
