Didn't one of the pundits say once they one of the players had "raped" another player by tackling him or beating him or something, sure he got sacked.

It's lads-in-the-pub cheap banter , you need to be smarter than that if your going to get paid £10,000s to appear on national TV to talk about football

I suppose in this case it wouldn't be so much not knowing what the word means but rather thinking it has a more broad meaning than it actually does. In his head he probably just thought you could use to mean "a very bad thing". Not attempting to defend him mind, just think he's more thick than malicious. I mean, if he was being malicious, doing it on live TV would be a particularly stupid time to do so.
 
Is it even a saying? Seems a strange phrase to use anyway. Remember when pundits used to refer to players getting dribbled past as 'being raped'? Now that sort of made sense in a sick way but this doesn't even make sense to me.
