Zak Johnson

One of those in the 21’s who always impressed me and I thought would come through. Different levels we are playing at now and only a tiny percent will reach that level .
That is the unfortunate reality of promotion.

A good few of the academy kids would have had a decent shot at stepping up to the Championship over the next year or two, but it's such a huge leap from the Championship to the Prem that unfortunately most of them won't make it.

You just have to look at the likes of Dan Neil and Luke o9 . Outstanding in the Championship yet can’t get a look in now .

The bottom line is you nurture players to try to make it in the game. What level that will be is up to them. Those that just fall short you hopefully sell for a million or 2 to help pay for the academy.

Exactly this. The reality is that at every club the vast majority of kids won't make it and this level. So it's the clubs responsibility to make sure that as many as possible are leaving us in a position where they're able to have a professional career at whatever their level ends up being.

Desperately needs to go elsewhere and play football, hopefully early himself a decent permanent move in January/summer.

Cracking lad so hope the move goes well for him as like everyone says he needs to play and develop, plus show us all where he’s at.

For every protege there are countless journeymen who still might make a decent living in the game. Look at all the lads who represent England at every youth level but for whatever reason just don’t make it to the front rank. If this happens to Zak it won’t be due to any lack of commitment by him.

You never know how things shake out. Ballard is undoubtedly talented but was third or fourth choice CB in previous seasons. Would we all have predicted him looking so comfortable in a premier team above some of his peers?

Ballard was only really 3rd choice here because he was constantly injured tbf, he's always been a very capable CB at Championship level when he was fit. He's also one of the ones I thought would make the step up, because of his defensive and physical attributes. I think he's surpassed my expectations of him at this point though, and he looks physically tremendous this season - he said he was in the gym all summer and gained extra muscle for PL. Its certainly working for him.

When you look at someone like Johnson, he'll be 21 before the season ends and he's never a kicked a ball above League 2 level. He just needs games, anywhere. He just hasn't played enough football. I don't see any prospect here for him at all, we've massively outgrown that possibility for him.

We have a duty of care towards these young lads though, to try and help them find good moves and progress their careers. And you never know, the likes of John Egan, Conor Hourihane and others have left and gone down the leagues and then ended up playing Championship football (and some PL) later in their careers. They needed some solid seasons of regular football.

Decided to go to Sutton v York. Playing right side of a back 3, and frankly he has been very poor. Unless he has an injury, he was blowing out of his arse at 30 mins

It’s cold

Here ends my match report

Scored for York today, their fans are desperate for him to sign permanently.

Would be a good move for him with them likely being promoted to L2 this season.

Chance for him to play regular games and hopefully eventually move up through the leagues.

Mind they lost the playoffs with something daft like 100 points last season, could easily happen again, imagine Rochdale are favourites
