He was f***ing quality, but it’s partly. because Reg simplified his assignment.

Watch the goal against Leeds back, it’s sloppy, he just doesn’t track Calvert-Lewin. He made a similar half mistake against Thiago v Brentford. Doesn’t take much at this level. The reason? His instincts when marking *zonally* are just a bit off compared to experienced (he’s played his whole career as a full back) centre backs like Alderete.

But tonight we see the difference - making not zonally, but man to man against Haaland. Was the same against Palace when we put him up against Matete. The man is an outstanding 1 on 1 defender. I don’t think any striker has really bullied him this year.

I’m not critical of him at all, wasn’t in the previous post. He’s filling in. He made a mistake. It happens. Overall, he’s one of the best defenders ever to wear our shirt, this defence is easily the best we’ve ever had in my lifetime.

Credit to RLB though. We went proper old school with our CBs tonight, a stopper and a sweeper. You don’t see that very often now, you usually see two flat zonal defenders. A plan for Haaland that got the best out of our resources. Just one of countless subtle tactical tweaks he made that got us over the line.
