They don’t do soft signals anymore. Dropped that about two years ago. They send it to DRS when there is doubt about whether it was a fair catch. But once they have done so, the third umpire according to the protocol just reviews the whole thing.

You can maybe argue he was a bit feeble sending it upstairs because it clearly carried. But the process was correct.

Fair play. I got that badly wrong.

I’ve just read it was scrapped to avoid confusion. Smith looked pretty confused by the process
