Brighton fan in peace

Firstly, good luck on Sunday. I’m sure most of the footballing world would be delighted if you can secure all three points. You’ve been a breath of fresh air since being promoted.

I’m also completely biased as I’m married to a Mackem and was delighted when you got promoted in May.

Anyway, Brighton STH very much in peace, looking ahead to our fixture next Saturday at the AMEX.

Happy to answer any questions about your upcoming visit.

It’s only your second visit to our ‘new’ home. Your first was in the League Cup way back in 2011 when you were only the fourth side to come and visit. It’s also the first time we’ll have played each other in the league since 2005. That fixture was at the Withdean in the season you won the Championship. The last time we hosted you before that was in 1992. There can’t have been many fixtures where the last three league meetings have been at three different home grounds!

Brighton, as many of you will know is a fantastic city with lots of places to eat and drink whilst enjoying a long weekend. Unfortunately, with the stadium being where it is (not in the city centre, another long story), places close to the ground are limited.

Your best best is to drink in Brighton (or alternatively Lewes) and then utilise the free travel that is included your match ticket. The stadium has a dedicated railway station - Falmer - train travel is free on matchdays to and from Brighton (and other nearby stations).

The only place to drink around the ground that welcomes away fans is Sussex University’s student bar (it is very good). It’s not in the city but a 10 minute walk to the ground.

The city itself is full of amazing pubs with something for everything but just allow enough time to get the train to the ground if you do this.

I’ll revert back to this thread with some suggestions of pubs but very happy to answer any questions you may have in the meantime about travel etc.

Nice one mate.

I won’t be at the away fixture but that’s a cracking post and welcome to the board.

Stick around if you like, we have a few fantastic away fans on here and more are always welcome.

Remember Anton Rogan scoring at the Goldstone Ground 😄

@Sussexseagull Just to point out Brighton beach is crap. Sorry like but it’s full of pebbles.

When you come up here make time to head to the Twin Resorts of Roker and Seaburn to experience one of the finest beach experiences in the north east.

Don’t let all the guff about Bamburgh fill you full of nonsense it’s a deserted wasteland. Seaburn and Roker have glorious beaches and add to that numerous bars and restaurants. If we got a couple of hours of bloody sunshine no one would ever leave!

What do Brighton fans think of the recent controversy over your owner? Is he a bit of a rogue?
Sir Tony Bloom is, without doubt, the best thing that ever happened to our football club. Without him, the stadium would never have been built, at least in its current form and we would not be in the Premier League or have played European football and won a group containing AEK Athens, Ajax and Marsielle.

Of course, any individual is not above criticism, but you’ll find be hard pressed to find any Albion that will go beyond feeling a bit awkward that The Guardian were allegedly banned from reporting at The Amex after the club rebuffed them. Albion have denied any wrongdoing and of course I’m inclined to believe them. TB knows the rules inside out and won’t have stepped out of line.

He’s far from a rogue, just a very smart businessman that has made a lot of money by being very good at what he does.

Having a local fan as a billionaire owner, really is the stuff of the dreams. The day we sell out to the Saudis or Americans, I’m out and will go and watch Non-league football.
Cheers for the reply, I might just need to swallow the charge
as it seems easy for me.
It you can do it and are driving, it’s portably worth it. I’ve used it a few times. Parking at the Uni is easy and then you can go in the SU before the game. Just be prepared to wait afterwards as it’s very busy getting out.
You have Opened a Can of Worms there Kidda, 😉 all the subsequent questioning BUT Many Thanks for an Informative and well thought out Post.

A Friend of mine is a Seagulls Fan and He too, married a local Lass from the North East after studying at Durham University (Posh Get, Lol). He used to drag me and an Evertonian Fan to exotic places like Carlisle United and Hartlepools United to watch the Seagulls when you guys were in the Lower Leagues....We even got a ticket to Bolster the Seagulls Fans at Sid James Park when Brighton beat the Delusional and Unethical Monochrome Toerags at Sid James Park.

Yes, Really Looking forward to this one......We're drinking in Newhaven afore and after the Game as the free rail Service runs from there too and it may be a little less crowded than Brighton, which Yes is a Lovely (alternative) Seaside City....Lewes is Canny too.

Hopefully, we leave on Sunday with more points towards the Magic 40 number.

On the way home, We aim to take in Hartlepools United's game at Braintree Town on the Sunday too..... before as Chris Rea (Middlesbrough's Finest, well after Paul Rodgers) sang....." Driving Home for Christmas."

All the Best to you Seagulls!!

Ha'way the Lads and Up the Pools!!!
Been to both Carlisle and Hartlepool. I saw a Baz Savage 90+7 winner in about 2008?

He did his trademark moonwalk in front of a poor grieving family of a youth team player who had come to watch the game (clearly he didn’t know) and it kicked right off.

When I think about how many different grounds I’ve been to and how very different it could have been for us - 45 minutes of going out of business - to then seeing us play Roma away, it really is incredible.

Enjoy Newhaven, if you are meeting mates, it will be fine. It’s a bit further out, but fine. Just don’t end up on the ferry to France …
Is Tommy W. going to be in the away end.
I hope he’s back fit but I doubt it. I’d have loved him to get the reception he deserves from you.

He’s had a very average start to the season. There is definitely a player in there, but it’s taken him some time to get settled.
Yeah I'm staying over with two friends so I don't need to rush about getting back. Looking forward to exploring the bars round Brighton
For anyone else, this is what I would suggest.

Am gannin to your place paid £278 for me ticket in what they say is neutral fan area..
Can I chant and have a malarkey?

Seemed lots of empty seats against West Ham considering you are playing well?
Yes, but sadly, for a number of reasons:

1 - The ticket exchange system is a right ball ache. You can no longer just pass your ST to a mate. You have to pay an annual fee and then pass it across. Or, you can buy a ticket on the ticket exchange, but that also is a faff. It also means the club gets to sell the ticket twice if it's sold, but this only opens if the game is sold out.

I read your thread about ID for away games. It's doing it in our atmosphere away from home, which used to be excellent. Now, under pain of a ban and losing your loyalty points, you can't share an away ticket. Even if I was ill on the day of the game, you can't pass your ticket on to your kids or family. If you are caught, you'll get banned.

2 - The travel. I've managed to crack it, but it only took eleven years, and it still takes me a minimum of seventy minutes to get home after the full-time whistle. The Park & Ride and train queues have worn a lot of people down. Especially when it's raining, people just don't want to stand around for an hour after the game waiting for a bus or train. A lot of this is out of the club's hands; it took two public enquiries and an approval from the deputy PM to get our stadium, but still, it's exhausting.

3 - The football is good, but there is a feeling amongst a minority that we have reached a plateau. IMO, where we are is amazing, but it's not the fast-paced rollercoaster we had under Roberto De Zerbi. Selling our best players to Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham has consequences. This is probably exacerbated because a lot of our fans are still 'newer' to the club. We lost a whole generation of fans from 1997 to 2011 when we had no permanent home, and only in the last few years has that reversal started to be reversed. From 1997-1999 we played home football 75 miles away. It's the same as you playing home games in York (ish). A lot of these newer fans don't realise how bad the 'war years' were.

4 - The cost of living. Premier League football is far too expensive for what it is. I purchased an extra ticket for our fixture, and it cost £50. Try that for a dad with two kids, and when you purchase food, drinks, etc., it's £100 (and the rest) for a day out.

5 - Fatigue. We do have a high retention rate of STH ((95%), but people no longer see it as the end of the world if they miss West Ham at home. This was the seventeenth time we have played them since being promoted.

I'm assuming that is in hospitality? You can't wear club colours in here though.

Reasonable reply, I’d love to see all clubs have to commit to x amount of tickets at £30 for home fans as well as away. Even our tickets have started to creep north of £40 which given our area is becoming excessive imo.
