Swindon Town 25/26 thread

3 forwards out tomorrow.
Typical.
Should be a decent crowd and atmosphere with Bolton bringing down 1500.
Swindon v Bolton - a repeat of the 1995 Coca-Cola League Cup semi-final (played over two games) for those of us of a certain vintage. I seem to remember that the Reliant Robins lost the tie narrowly on aggregate despite winning the home leg as Wanderers progressed to the Wembley showpiece against Liverpool. Both sides were competing in the equivalent of today's Championship (Endsleigh League Division 1) at the time although one was promoted and the other was relegated at the end of the season if memory serves me well. I digress, good luck today and hopefully see you in Round 3!

Spot on.
Wanker John McGinley is still a sore subject in these parts.
Always raises a smile when you meet Bolton fans of a certain age and mention the bastard to them. Was a constant thorn in our side back then.
“Is that bastard John McGinley playing today.” Let’s hope not.

Good luck today mate.

John McGinlay, gosh, there's a blast from the past! Prolific goalscorer for Wanderers in the ninetees who netted a late winning goal against Sunderland for Bolton at Burnden Park in torrential rain on Easter Monday 1995. I was stood with the away supporters on the open terrace next to the supermarket and was soaked to the skin.

Looking back at the League Cup semi-final, it was interesting to note that future Sunderland footballers Alan Stubbs (I use the term footballer very loosely in his case) and Jason McAteer scored for Bolton over the two games as did McGinlay and the wonderfully named Mixu Paatelainen.

On reflection it must have been a blow at the time not to get to a major cup final having lost the tie by the finest of margins and indeed won that competition back in 1969 against Arsenal.

There's a blast from the past: Skinny McGinley who we signed from The Heed when picking up non-league players was in fashion.

IIRC he'd done well scoring goals with Eshinton before Heed.

TBF he was no Chris Waddle or Alan Shoulder (others from that NL level)

Semi final defeat also against the eventual winners Wolves (beat Forest) 1979.
We defeated star studded Arsenal 4-3 AET in the Quarter Final (taking a replay from Highbury 1-1 and scoring in the 85th minute - Billy Tucker header. One of my favourite games where we packed out the Clock End. Sadly no coverage but the home game on You Tube.

Semi Final we were 2-1 up from the home leg and once again another injustice in football where the Wolves keeper should have been red carded, Paul Bradshaw taking out Alan Mayes at knee height !! Losing teeth and only a yellow.
Lost 3-1.

Tough game today.

Great stats those and the memories, we never lose the football ones. All etched in the memory but I can't remember what I had for tea two nights ago.

Hope Swindon can write another chapter into their cup folklore this afternoon.

I bet you're looking forward to the game, enjoy.

Wow just incredible and played superb.
Don’t underestimate Bolton, they looked a decent side, first half slick passing although credit to Swindon every player magnificent today.

Swindon chased everything and I thought when Bodin missed a sitter first half Bolton would get back into it.
We’ve got Drinaldo though and never stops running and closing down.
His 3rd for the hat trick outstanding.

It’s days like this that make all the effort feel special.

Sunderland away please 🙏🙏🍺🍺

Leaving now 🙏⚽
Come on you useless red and white bastards.
To add Marra, I have seen Swindon 3 times, once at Wembley (🙄), once I can’t remember and once when you played Bolton at home in the late 80’s or early 90’s, I remember that as I was with a cousin of Tony Philliskirk (Bolton player), we had posh seats (from Tony) and he scored so we went mental, much to the amusement of the Swindon fans, basically if the Lads play you at your place I’m due a ticket 👍

Reckon I will have a rather large list. Getting your order in early 🤣⚽

Apart from a David Brent comment at 5 mins. Spot on and what a job he has done in 12 months.

Pleased you enjoyed it; great result & performance against a higher division side, job done. I loved Drinan's 3rd goal!

Fingers crossed you get the draw you want, with a run of average fortune an effective team that can chase, battle & score a goal (like Swindon) could go a fair bit further in the Cup.

What a superb goal.
I’m buzzing here as you can imagine. Lost my voice.
Enjoyed starting off the “Wanker John McGinley Song.”
Once the laughs subsided a few joined in, some clearly no idea as to who he was and the pain he caused us.

When Swindon were 2-0 up the boos from the Bolton fans were disappointing. Swindon pressed them and they kept going backwards.
A fantastic result and day.

Never underestimate the Holloway effect. From your posts over that time he's done a top to bottom job on your club's playing staff...and a good one for what he's put together (re; fitness, mentality, belief, confidence).

They're the times being an away fan are best, it shows what a good job is being done on them. It was a top top result, yes I'd fancied Swindon to get a result but four-zip? You have to face up to how other teams face up to you now if Swindon can do that.
