Retirement

A mate started doing that after he “retired” not as cushy as it looks apparently

This, I know someone who drove for a supermarket, luckily it was just for something to do rather than needing the money so when they took the piss out of him once too often he just walked. The rest if the lads in his depot hated it but needed the money.

People look down on these minimum wage jobs and think they're a piece of piss. Lots arent.

He drives round boro and is regularly chasing little scrotes trying to knick stuff

I quite like the idea of that - I wouldn't mind driving one of the supermarket delivery van around - but it would limit your ability to sod off abroad at a moments notice. Having a little side hustle to make a little money would give more flexibility.
My mate (sadly passed, got 2yrs out of his early retirement) got a job delivering for Amazon and loved it. Must be someone on here from Amazon who could explain better but essentially whenever he fancied an afternoons work, he would log on and sign up for a "parcel" of deliveries. He said it was down as a 4hr set but by starting at 1pm or doing a Sunday, he could be done in less than 3hrs. Picked and chose when he worked. This was central Scotland/Edinburgh area.

It's called Amazon Flex:

Maybe a good idea if you live near one of their distribution warehouses. Works in a similar way to doing deliveries for Deliveroo etc.

Supermarket delivery drivers are more likely to be on fixed hour contracts.

I hope you work it out so you can retire and spend some time as you both wish too.
We lost my sister in law at 47 (also cancer,) and whist we can't afford to retire just yet early 50s,, we both dropped to 4 days a week as we realised life is to short. If you decide the dinN es aren't quite right perhaps part time could be an option
Best wishes to you both.
Thank you, I appreciate that. I`ve pretty much decided. Time is more precious to me than a few more quid. I`ll manage on what I get. Might need to send the kids out to get a second job though
Jeez fingers crossed for you both. If a work pension scheme, is there any free advice on offer? I’d have thought 6 months won’t make a big difference to your annual amount but might make a huge difference to quality of life to you both in that time. Easy for me to say of course but seen a few older people at work hang on a bit longer and then massively regret it because of family ill-health
So many people have told me just this. 6 months won`t make a big difference but having that time will be so valuable to me.
Good luck mate,
but from my experience, hand your notice in today.
I went at 55 and yes pension was reduced but I got it 5 years earlier so in theory I could end up taking more money out of it.
Who knows when our time is up.
Heard of lads working right up to 65 start taking work pension then not seeing 70.

Same mate am early riser , but I head to gym for 7 till 9, few weights, swim and a nice sauna/ steam / shower home for a bit breccy , then off out on a countryside dog walk.
All before dinner time 👌
Bit potter on in the afternoon doing garden or odd jobs.
Never put TV on during day.
I`m so close to my planned date that 5-6 month earlier is becoming more of a no brainer the more I think about it.
Does retirement have to be permanent?

Why not consider it as a career break for 12 months then reassess how you are doing? You might find you can live and enjoy life on what you have now, or if that is not working then you have options to go back to your old line of work, go back part time or do a low stress lower paid job to top things up.
I`m certainly considering a part time job at some point if necessary - quite like the job my kids had as uni students at a local theatre/venue. Would be ideal. Also saw a mobile library drivers job for 2 afternoon`s a week a while back but that came up too soon. If it came up now I`d jump at it.
I take it you're not self employed ? I read your stuff about interviews so thought maybe freelance . No chance of a year off?
Edit ,should have read thread to end
No my interviews and stuff is purely freelance. I have a proper job that pays the bills but the music stuff is what takes up a lot of my time, fits round my job and is something I love doing.

100% mate
I have always kept myself fit, but when younger was more into football until the bad injuries came along and had to stop.
Would say mid 30’s hit a bit of a slob period and piled on weight but before I hit 40’s decided to exercise regularly, and I have religiously since then, ow retired and approaching 58 and probably as fit and in good shape as I have ever been.
But more importantly it’s a mental health and social thing as got friends in place I go,
so can easy spend 3 hours in a morning 7-10 am
do a weights workout, swim then be in sauna and steam room have some great craic.
Sets me up for the day. 💪👍
I do something at least every other day, but often short sessions. Life getting in the way is the hardest part.

I’m considering asking to drop to a 9 day fortnight in 18 months time just to get a cycling day and really thrash out the miles. My boss is a work all hours type who days like today comes in with the big document he did last night that did need a lot of research, then talked about the next important thing that needs doing with “well that is my weekend gone to get that done”. I can’t see him liking that request.

I’m very much the mindset that if something can not be done in work time it is likely that management have not resourced things correctly. There is one thing I was considering doing this evening as a rare one off, then remembered we are playing tonight and made sure there is beer in the fridge.

Vaux were looking for a delivery driver. Thursday and or Friday depending on how busy . Bit stock work if needed . I decided I'm happy doing nothing all week still at this point
I spotted that. Im 6mths ish away

Agreed but you read loads about side hustles, get the feeling 90% are just bullshit.

We have some people on 9 day fortnights and take every other Friday off. Seems to work fairly well as Fridays are usually a waste of time anyway.

In theory it's around 45 minutes extra per day but a lot of people do that for free anyway.

Out of interest, how do you rate your fitness levels compared to working life?

Since I changed to a long commute and had a few injuries, mine has dropped. A few years ago I was playing football 2-3 times per week and cycling to work at least 4 days a week, often every day for the 3 summer months with longer cycle rides on weekends.

I'm aware of how much of that has slipped in recent years and I need to really make the time for it.

I was wondering if a few people end up exercising more in retirement when then find they have more free time.
I've had an active life without hitting gyms or routines
Footy was a hobby, 5 a side into my late 50s .2 to 4 times a week ,then 1 a week in later years . Riding off road motorbikes, all round fitness work out .
I do neither as much now so I realise I'm not as fit but you can't do stuff like that forever. I've lost weight since finishing and I'm concentrating on just a decent level of all round health including most importantly a healthy head . I think that's what you have to protect into old age . Your state of mind . I was doing a little weights at home then developed a back strain so you're wary of picking stuff up that takes forever to go and stops you doing stuff

I had not even considered the aspect of making up the hours. I was just thinking 10% pay cut, 10% work cut.

I'm not aware of anyone else doing that, but no reason why I could not be the first. It will be a nice milestone, I'll be turning 50, have worked there two years and hit a jump point in the pay scales that will absorb a proportion of the loss.

My manager did brand someone in another team as unprofessional for having the audacity to go ahead with some planned leave when there was important work that needed doing, so reducing hours might be a hard sell. But in my favour, financial restrictions at the minute has seen us lose a post and not have them replaced, so now he is very keen that the staff are happy and do not leave because we might not replace them. And, if turned down I have no problem with working another year, trying again and if still rejected move on. I said I'd work there a minimum of 3 years, I'll stick to that and look around. I have no loyalty!

About 4 yrs ago we created an "escape plan" and for the first time put all of our savings and pensions ect on paper in one list. We've religiously updated it weekly as a bit of a fun (small f!) ritual. It really helped when it came to speaking with an ifa as everything was at hand plus if one of us croaks it the other will be sorted. Yesterday I was opening the post when I discovered the Mrs has a pension she didn't have on the list!!! A few "f***ing unreal you" type comments from me and a phone call to the pension company later she 'remembers' she has a DB scheme with an option for 45k lump and just under 7k a Yr payment!!!! She then declares she "might have another one from 10yrs at NTL/virgin media !!! " thick as mince.

After the initial "FFS" though, that's an excellent addition to retirement plans!

Exactly this. No one knows what tomorrow will bring (except 3 points of course) so if you can afford to go, do so at the earliest opportunity. I’ve no idea how I had time to fit in work. There’s millions of things you can do when you’re retired. Browse the SMB at 9-37 for example!

I’ve been working a pattern of 37 hours compressed into 4 days for about 20 years.

Tin hat on here (as not on politics forum) but I'm getting concerned that a possible reform government in 2029 (I'll be able access my pension in 2031) could torpedo my pension with Liz Truss style economics/budget and delay my retirement by a good few years.
Has anyone else considered this?

If I can't do a standard 10% reduction then that is an option. I'm sort of 9-5 but for the last 4 weeks I have rarely finished before 6pm and have been taking half hour lunches, so switching to that pattern would be easy.

Apparently it was the bank of England trying to reverse QE, buying up bonds that pushed up bond prices (and that comes from a lefty economist). Its probably not as bad now because interest rates are higher anyway. It might be an issue if rates drop again, then shoot back up. If youre worried about bond markets, stick it all in equities which are more crashy but uk politics have less influence on them.
