Any changes for 2nd Test šŸ¤”

Yet there’s plenty of Aussies including Stuart Law today saying that going to Canberra for a pink ball game on the lowest, slowest surface in Australia and then going to Brisbane where it has a fair bit of bounce would be poor preparation.
I have no great knowledge of the conditions but what I will say is runs are runs at any decent competitive level in any conditions. 2 of our better players look a bit short at the minute. 3 or 4 failures in row each. Root has a top score of 31.in 4 knocks.

Pope and Foakes were both already in the side before McCullum?

They stayed on under him and one got discarded. Lees was the other one discarded.

Rew won't get picked unless McCullum/Key/Stokes all go.

I would maintain young Root wouldn't get picked by this setup. Neither would have Cook so basically England two most proficient run scorers ever

They've not picked any batsman yet from County Cricket that isn't a white ball dasher.
I personally think and it’s all about opinions mate.

That they is currently no players playing in the county championship anywhere the class of Root when he was coming through playing in it.

I get your wider point but if Root or someone in the same class was coming through now I personally think would get picked.

Again just an opinion but the top runs scorers over the last few years in that competition are not in the same class.

Difficult to say. Rew has 11 tons by 21. And an average of 42.

I haven’t seen enough to say if he has the ability or not.

Comparing v the 2nd highest test run scorer ever is a bit harsh mind

Yeah it is always difficult mate and it’s opinion based.

And I don’t want to come across as a county championship knocker as this is not what I want to do.

But imo I personally think they is a lack of credible top class players in the main ready or better than the players currently in the side.

Although I do think Crawley should be dropped and someone else given a go.

And I do think Rew will be given a go at some point as going to be a top top class player imo, but not that many about generally

Bazball this Bazball that.

We were only the 4th Highest Test Average per Over this year.

So what excuse can we make up now.

When Root made his test debut his first class record was:

37 matches
2015 runs
8 fifties
4 hundreds
38.02 average
222* best score

Right now James Rews first class record is:

56 matches
3376 runs
12 fifties
11 hundreds
42.2 average
221 best score

So Rew has more centures, more fifties (even if you adjust them to account for him playing more matches) and a better average.

If he maintains that output then he absolutely must be in the side in 2027 like.

They rarely change after just one game, even though it’s very tempting.

Problem is there is no replacement opener in the squad…… though they are probably stupid enough to put Pope there so they can find a reason to drop him when he fails
Pope essentially opened in the last test and did a little better than most. Facing a ball less than six deliveries old isn't a huge stretch.

Hardly ideal but Crawley is mentally done.

Accept the fact that England will not win every game and that the world isn't going to end when we do.

Not away from home we dont.
You simply said ā€˜ would be nice if win a few every now and then’.

Anyone reading that who doesn’t follow cricket would think we hardly win a game.

When overall it’s the opposite we have won a lot more tests than we have lost.

Without checking the stats most test teams have better home records than away historically so nothing knew there really

I love how people on social media pick at everything.

OK you win, I should have said away from home. Im going to stand in the corner now with my dunce cap on.

I was taking overall under this regime, but even that you quoted is hardly justifing

The main objective in any sport is to look to improve.England did improve initially under McCullum but opposition quickly identify and exploit weakness. Stats over the whole McCullum era are largely irrelevant it's whether we are admitting and adjusting to identified weakness. Comments after the 1st test suggest a refusal to do so The remaining tests in this ashes series are becoming fairly crucial in judging McCullum and Stokes.
