Ian Botham 70 not out


I was lucky enough to see him play. He was so confident when batting and bowling. Brilliant slipper.
 
Remember watching his wonderful century at Old Trafford on Grandstand. The BBC coverage, as it was in those days on a Saturday afternoon, was continually interrupted by horse racing etc. Those were the days. Benaud and Laker. Good morning Richie. Good morning all. Nothing like today's camera angles, slo-mo and close ups of the cracks o the pitch. But somehow,oozing back, it seemed better. The nostalgia of youth perhaps ?

I’m really not sure about the questionable person / seems a bellend slant, the guy has raised millions, literally millions, for leukaemia research which has led to many children’s lives being saved. He put himself through hell to do that at a time when that stuff wasn’t done by just one person. This in itself is amazing.

He says the odd silly thing but he has an opinion and that is all. You might think he’s wrong but we all have the right to an opinion. There’s nothing illegal or nasty he’s said.

As a cricketer he was an entertainer at a time when the likes of Boycott and Tavare would bat all day for 50 runs. A fast swing bowler, he even took wickets with off spin against SL in 1984, a swashbuckling batsman, the most outrageous shots that were 40 years ahead of their time, and a superb slip fielder and fielder in general. The cricket would be on the telly and when you found out Botham was in you’d come in and watch. He was great for the game.

The mad thing is his career was pretty much finished after 1985, his stats then compared with Sobers but he kept going through another back fracture (his first back fracture being in 1980) and still did a decent job at medium pace. He was also a very fair player, who never claimed a dodgy catch or whinged at the umpire or hung around when given out. He played hard but with a smile.

Everyone who has played with and against him had the utmost respect for him and that’ll do for me.

Gave someone a good hiding on a Scunthorpe street. Manhandled a bloke on a plane while playing for Queensland. Had sex with a Miss Barbados while smoking pot. .

And these are just the stories that made the newspapers.
