Coventry

No - I'd have been nervous however we were playing though with how tight it was.

My point was that using xG to decide who was the better team in a tie like that doesn't work, because xG changes depending on the game. The xG stats also show that we were by far the better team after their goal: 0.57xG to their 0.23xG in extra time alone. xG only really works over a long period, if you use it over a short period like one game, or a two-legged tie then you're suggesting that there's no game management, or changes as the game goes on - which RLB is notorious for.
Fair enough, I must be more pessimistic than you. I felt like the game was swinging their way, which made the release after the Ballard goal even better.

I just think it's revisionism to say we were completely in control of the game, the stats show we'd limited them more than I remember but they were applying pressure for the majority of the game and all it takes is one bit of luck or a cockup etc.

Completely agree on your xG point. I probably should have responded to someone further up the chain but I was being lazy.

I think I had my head in my hands for the vast majority of it after they scored to be fair.

Watching it back we were fairly comfortable though despite a few scares. If we saw out the gameplan to a 0-0 it would have been an easier watch being a goal ahead on agg.

Was sitting in the local with two norwich mates and they said I just star staring into space for the last ten minutes like I was in shock
And then ballard scored and I had to be peeled off the ceiling

Last 2 or 3 seasons they've always started really poorly and then started to fly up the table once it clicked. The season they lost to Luton in the playoff final they started November in the relegation zone.

Bit ominous for the rest of the league that they have started so well this season and show no signs of slowing.

I think Ipswich will run them all the way this season, but I'd be surprised if they aren't the top 2 come May.

That play off defeat has spurred them on, like our Crystal Palace defeat. I fully expected Sheff United to be like our Charlton play off final losers and kick on, instead they've ended up moping about and have no chance of promotion.

Leadbitter?

Losing the PO final on pens in 2022/23, being cheated out of an FA Cup final appearance in 2023/24 (under the VAR ‘margin of error’ bullshit that magically didn’t apply) and then Ballard last second winner in 2024/25.

No wonder they’re flying

On course for 108 points or thereabouts, but IIRC Leicester were on for similar not so long ago.

Just checked Leicester first 17 was 14 wins 3 losses, 42 points. On for 113
32 matches 25 wins 4 defeats 3 draws, 78 points. On for 112
They lost 7 of the final 14. Finished on 97

They've responded well to the end of last season, polar opposite of Sheff Utd. But then no kneejerk in sacking the manager anything which helps.

Outside of clubs with parachute money, Coventry are the biggest spenders in the Championship over the last few seasons combined.

It always gets overlooked but with the money they have spent, they'd want to be seriously challenging for promotion!
And they will have nowhere near the PSR wiggle room we enjoyed if they go up.

It really was the perfect storm for SAFC going up last season rather than the one before.

Wish we'd signed sakamoto in the summer.
Honestly like, he's really not a good PL player. He's really inconsistent.

@LDNCCFC wat are your thoughts on Sakamoto. I think he's a good Championship winger, better than Patrick Roberts, but he flatters to deceive mainly. And he's too lightweight for the Prem.

In fact, (a question I've discussed with the other half recently) which of your current team do you think would do a job in the PL, and where do you need to strengthen? Personally, I love Grimes, but both of us think even he's not strong enough for the PL.
