Nissan

Talking nonsense you can come in if you like overtime short notice your choice , planned where you have no choice has to be 2 weeks notice I’ve been there almost 30 years
Ive asked this before and never really got an answer...what happens if you dont come in on one of those "planned Saturdays" or when they come round at bait time and tell everyone there is an hours O/T on and you say that you are not doing it...what happens?

They try and get cover if you tell them before they tell you it’s on , if you just don’t turn up on the day then you get in bother as you would anywhere. If you have to go somewhere all you need to do is when you come in on a morning just say I can’t work tonight I need ato get away for something it’s the broth heeds that can’t grasp it and just want to be awkward and refuse to work when they tell them it’s on that can’t seem to get their heads around it. I needed to be away on Thurs to get to the tip as my car was full of cardboard so I went in on the morning and said mind I can’t work tonight need to get away and was a case of aye no bother I’ll sort it out for you later on the day last hair they called an hour and they got me away normal time

Worked there for 7 years, as mentioned memory might not be perfect but i'm not 'talking nonsense' whatsoever. Short notice 'your choice' didnt feel like that at all when i was there, there was a fair amount of pressure put on you if you didnt want to. Everyone has different experiences but for me the management were poor and it was quite an old school intimidating/bullying form of management by some in there which spoilt the place. In terms of the people i worked with, the lads were spot on and its what got you through the shifts really

Is that written down anywhere in your contract or is that people being flexible?

Just sounds like a situation that'd happen provided you were mates with whoever made the decision and less-favoured staff would get refused.

Seen it happen in most places. It's why I'm not keen on most jobs. Work is good, jobs are shite. Your general happiness depending on whether some random prick likes or doesn't like your face.

Contract says reasonable amount of over time

Its certainly a lot better now than it used to be... In the 80's we often stopped back at short notice during the week and worked Saturdays and even Sundays sometimes on day shifts...
I Remember before OT was capped at 1hr on lates in the noughties we came in one Thursday late shift on line 1 with no OT planned and found out Days 1hr had been cancelled and the useless senior who later got sacked I mean paid off to leave when he got caught pinching alloy wheels decided he would put 1 hour 30 mins OT on... 😲As Friday was an earlier start everyone was pi**ed especially with day shift getting out of it.
Anyway half way through the shift I was getting a shortage for the final line and my mate who worked on there said f** me look at this.. When he took the rear fender protection off someone had hammered the sh*** out of the inside of the rear wing. Then as the next cars came down there were more and more damaged ones. When I called past later he said over 20 cars hammered to f*** and 3 had had a screwdriver hole through the roof which he said would end up as write off's!!! 🤬
Went past the central meeting area and said senior's face was an absolute picture, he looked sick as f****...
They checked the camera's worked out what stations it must have happened between and eventually sacked a lad for doing it but that went down as the worst case of sabotage I had seen in in the 35 years I was there.
And Qashqai launch 2006/7 we were on 3 shifts on line 1 and did all day Saturdays, and Friday night shifts O/T most of the year which meant you had 3 or 4 days a month off which takes a big toll out of you over the year. The senior said think of all the money you are getting, which was about £10k of overtime, I said yeah when are you actually going to spend it though, a few piped in don't worry our lass will soon do that!!! 🤣
And yes come November after all that overtime and doing the last Friday night shift in September OT too they called STANDOWNS...🧐

People don’t half talk shite about Nissan they either don’t understand policy or don’t even work there and heard it off Dave down the pub

Sounds like a dreadful place to work. Grim stuff.

Life is too short.
I didnt really appreciate how badly it was managed until i left. However it is clear some people have had a good experience there, which is fine really. Ideally everyone would. Once I left and seen how places were managed elsewhere (bad and good mind you) it made me realise just how much it can affect your day to day life outside of work. Again this is my personal experience and i do get that some people are quite happy to work with these rules in place

how can you tell them before they tell you? is it sort of the rumour mill that there's overtime or a need to work later than planned and you don't really know till you're asked?

You just say I’m not available for whatever dates your doing something then if they say it’s on you have already informed them your not free

but how do you know what dates they have in mind?
i'd like to add i'm certainly not one of those anti nissan type persons on here. i just find it hard to understand how a company of that size and apparent 'just in time' or 'kaizen' /whatever approach can decide at the drop of a hat they need more production. sounds like the production planners aren't doing their jobs properly that results in folk being pressurised into disrupting their home lives.

You shouldn't have to tell them on a constant loop when you can and can't do extra in advance, just incase they decide to ask.

Load of shite
