We watched the original Halloween tonight. £3.75 to rent it on Prime.

Utter crap.

Not scary in the slightest. Slow paced and continuity errors all over.
"Last Exit to Brooklyn" 8/10 (BFI Player)
A glimpse into life there around a workers strike during the war, from the mundane to outright harrowing scenes.

The book is great. 4 stories - the one you’ve captured is one of them but the book is more graphic than the film.

Eastern Promises (2007) 8/10
Russian mafia in London. Graphic violence, as you'd expect from Cronenberg, but let down by a trite ending.

Videodrome (1983) 8/10
All I remember of this from my teens was Debbie Harry with her kit off. Says some things relevant to our current media landscape, though not sure the special effects hold up in 4K.

Things to Come (1936) 6/10
Dystopian sci-fi from HG Wells, who was actively involved in the production. The future seen through the prism of a bunch of pre-war English toffs with cut-glass accents.

Ballad of a Small Player - 5/10

New Netflix release. Style over substance. The film looks nice, the colours, the sets, the clothes. Has a bit of a Wes Anderson aesthetic and quirkiness.

Colin Farrell is decent in it, maybe a little over the top. Tilda Swinton’s character is just stupid and annoying. The other characters manage to be both over the top and also instantly forgettable.

The story itself never really gets going and I’m not sure what the point of it was. My lass (no) was doomscrolling on her phone after about 30 minutes but I stuck it out waiting for a finale that never came.

The sad thing i find is i have total apathy towards watching anything at the cinema. I just say oh ill wait til its on streaming. And I'm a movie need, but nothing has got me hey i must go see

Maybes the advent of TV prolongedseries has taken it away but I just don't feel movies the same way I used to

That or the Mrs (no) constant watching of those hallmark movies has ruined my will to live

28 Years Later (2025). 8/10. Some of the North East accents were a bit off like but that’s a minor quibble.

The Alto Knights (2025). 3/10. De Niro plays two roles in warring former friends mobsters Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. Woeful script, dialogue, acting. From early on very clear it’s a vehicle to try and make money out of De Niro still being around. Awful film.

Watched The House of Dynamite last night.

Thought it was very good, can understand people's frustration about the ending, but what do you think happens?

8/10

Just watched it. Thought it was excellent. Understandably not for everyone but it was just my sort of thing.

The ending was fine by me. The film wasn't about what happens next but how they got to that point in a matter of minutes.

Just read Cameron Crowe's memoir and decided to revisit some of his films.

Almost Famous ('Untitled' cut) (2000) 9/10
The bulk of his memoir is about the real story behind the film, and especially the significance of an empty chair in the family home (one of Crowe's sisters killed herself). The film only scratches the surface of Crowe's real life experiences, yet holds up as perhaps the best non-documentary film about 1970s rock.

Elizabethtown (2005) 6/10
I hated it when I first saw it. Roger Ebert highlighted a theory that it's actual about an angel (Kirsten Dunst) saving a lost soul (Orlando Bloom), and should be viewed not as a romcom but in the tradition of It's a Wonderful Life. It's still a mess, but the implausibility (eg when did Dunst find the time to prepare a massive dossier for Bloom's roadtrip?) becomes less of an issue.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) 8/10
Script by Crowe, directed by Amy Heckerling. Surprisingly edgy coming of age movie. Sean Penn provides the prototype for Bill & Ted.

I’ve got a signed copy that I’m waiting to start. It’s actually signed too and not just a printed signature or a sticker.
