Mercury Music awards 2025 in Newcastle

I know but they were massive at the time. The aim of the Mercury Prize should really be to promote artists who aren’t as high profile.

I can't really remember how big Wolf Alice were at the time they won it. If you compare them to this year were they Fontaines level? CMAT? In the middle?

Simz, Skepta, Sampha and Dave probably all around the CMAT level at the time from memory. Maybe a little higher. That's about the higest level of current success this award should be going to I think but acts like English Teacher and Young Fathers giving them push are the ideal winners.

It was quite funny on Look North when they got the kids to do a Fender tribute at Newcastle train station and they all wore red and white Lner scarfs. That must have triggered a few 🤣

Not a comment on Sam Fender's talent or the album; which is fairly decent from the few listens I gave it, but I've never taken the Mercury music award seriously.

Always seemed like something for chin-stroking Guardian readers.

Never known a place to have so much superiority complex and narcissism in it’s population.

It’s like the kid at the birthday party who has the all the games rigged to be won by them because it’s their party.

Everyone of them are unhinged and deranged.
Couldn't agree more. It was cringeworthy. They've no concept that the rest of the country just laughs at how inbred they are. I noticed he referred to the "Reejun" being the best in the World. Yes Sam the best for higher poverty, lower life expectancy, lower achievement, less investment.
Shame really because it was a decent enough show up until the predictable jingoism.
No problem with them awarding it the best album, noting that you have to pay to be nominated anyway, as it's subjective. Personally I'd have picked Romance if the purpose of the award is to showcase music as an art form but let's face it the award peaked at Screamdelica anyway. I don't recall Bobby Gillespie belting out the Fields of Athenry in 1992.

Haway, that's exceptionally petty. The north east is brilliant despite all of that, and there's no shame in being proud of your little part of the world. He'd have got slaughtered if he mentioned Newcastle instead.

Never listened to this lads music to be honest, saw him rock up on BBC breakfast once pissed in a mag top and that was that tbh. No suprised the mag awards are fiddled so he wins.

I'd imagine most genuiune musicians are trying to get their music/message out there to as many people as possible, whereas he's sold his soul to the cult for fame and fortune, and isolated himself from a load of other folk like me in doing so.

Which suggests to me his music couldn't have done it for him alone.
I believe he wasn't even a football fan before the Saudis took over. Now he's King Mag. Definitely in bed with PiF.

it's not petty at all. there's loads of brilliant places all over the world. I've lived here most of my life and think it's great but I never feel the need to suggest it's better than other places. clearly where you're born and raised has some impact on your personality but it doesn't define you. unless that's how you want to be defined. It's not like any of us have a say in it anyway.
I find it childlike to vociferously self promote. My dad's bigger than your dad. Yeah the North East is great but it's small minded to suggest it's better than anywhere else, especially if you've not been everywhere else. At least he's not buggered off to a mansion in Wiltshire like others who trade on their roots but I guess that's just because there's no money in selling records anymore.
The fact that he said Region instead of City suggested to me that he'd been prepped which just isn't very rock n roll. I can't imagine John Lydon being that compliant. Hey he might genuinely have said region as he's aware of his North Shields roots and that's fair enough and I've got no problem with creatives being inspired by their environment but don't let yourself be limited by it.

mind you nee one would bat an eyelid if Tom Smith won the mercury at the fire station and sunlun songs were being sang when he went to collect his award imo there

I'd be embarrassed tbh
