Lots of Saturdays morning trains from KGX have been cancelled meaning I had to take the Northern service instead as the next train is hours later.

Grand central soon to be stopping at seaham, hopefully that will increase its numbers, even just for a small journey.

If the last bit ref Seaburn is true that would be good for thousands of residents. Cant see why Northern Trains dont stop at Seaburn as well . Again, huge population living North of the Wear would benefit. Would cost nowt to set up.

🚉 SUNDERLAND STATION UPDATE

I’ve just come from another meeting with Northern Rail’s regional team to go through the state of Sunderland Station — and to make sure the improvements we’ve all been promised are actually being delivered.

There are finally some encouraging signs of progress, but there’s clearly loads more to do.

Here’s where things stand:

• LIFTS & ESCALATORS – Fully repaired and now on a proper maintenance schedule with Network Rail. I am told any future faults should be fixed within 24 hours — exactly how it should have been from day one.

• TOILETS – Open and operational, with extra patrols in place. Northern are working with Northumbrian Water to stop repeat blockages, and I’ve asked for checks to make sure the accessible toilet is always available.

• COFFEE STAND – The new coffee stall is open each day and already proving popular. Small things like this make the station feel that bit more welcoming.

• RETAIL & MARKETS – A tenant is being lined up for the main retail unit, and Northern are looking for the right mix of local traders for the remaining spaces. I’ve also asked for a quick and simple process to allow other small businesses and pop-ups to trade on a similar basis. The Friday Mackem Market will continue, with occasional art markets too.

• WELCOME & LOCAL FEEL – A new Welcome to Sunderland vinyl and artwork by a local artist should be in place soon, with more to come through projects with local schools. They’re even hoping to add a donated piano to the concourse — if anyone’s got one going spare please let me know! 🎹

• STAFF & SECURITY – A stronger staff presence and better coordination with Nexus are helping to tackle antisocial behaviour and keep the station safer.

• DOORS – Some of the door fittings from the original build weren’t right. Northern are sorting this and expect a lasting fix soon.

• COMMUNITY INVOVLEMENT – I want the public to have a real say in how the station develops. Northern have agreed to explore ways for regular users to stay involved in shaping future plans.

I’ve made it clear again that Sunderland deserves more than a station that’s just “almost adequate.” We should be aiming for something that properly reflects the pride of our city.

I’ll keep holding them to that — and I’ll keep pressing for further improvements as plans for the next stage develop.

All that sounds good, and this isn't digging out local MPs, but unless they open it up and get some natural light down there you'll always be polishing a turd imo.

Need to get the old Littlewoods building demolished, and have a grand entrance built at that end.

That would be down to network rail and if they see any value in it , I think the other entrance is part of the high street west project but will have to be council funded

Need to defer to people whose trade it is but surely pulling down that poundland building and opening up the station is a massive undertaking, not something we can do with a few claw hammers like Donald replacing the seats?

Fair play to him, he’s not letting them get away with anything they ran the old station into the ground and couldn’t have cared less. It’ll be interesting to see what the plan for the North End will actually look like.

Not sure any piano in the station would last very long though, even with the enhanced security it’s still scrote central.
