The Librarians. It's a documentary on the BBCI player about book banning in America. It seems this is also happening in the UK but maybe not on the same scale. Most of what I could see were LGBTQ titles or African American writers being banned. Freedom of speech as long as its white and Christian.

Psychological horror/thriller. An American backpacker steps on a landmine but the landmine is the least of his worries when his friend finds out he has been sleeping with his fiancée. 8/10 from me. 5.8/10 on IMDB.

The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) 7/10
Adaptation of Nelson Algren's novel about drug addiction in Chicago. Let down by a happy ending, by having been filmed in the studio rather than on location, and by pushing Frank Sinatra beyond his acting limits. Kim Novak's great, though.

The Master and Margarita (2024) 8/10
Russian adaptation of the famously challenging novel by Mikhail Bulgakov. Probably would have been better with less reliance on CGI. Very controversial in Russia, given that it deals with censorship under an oppressive regime.

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues (2025) 5/10
Much worse than I'd hoped. Some very tired 'jokes' (St Hubbins wondering what happened to his ex-girlfriend - she's a nun; an observation that there's always corn in your vomit). The celebrity cameos aren't much cop.

Scary film time of the year

Dead snow - zombie nazis frozen and brought back to life. 9/10 if you don’t take yourself too serious. 10/10 if you like gore.
It’s dubbed from Swedish I think, but worth it

HIM (2025). Dear me...Jordan Peele produced Sports Horror with pointless gore and extremely hammy acting. Can only give it a 0/10 coz there is nothing to recommend it. If they still do the Raspberries for worst movies this is gonna win a lot of prizes.

A shame if that’s accurate. I thought legacy was decent (perhaps my judgement is clouded by the superb daft punk soundtrack) and had high hopes, including for the NIN soundtrack this time around.

Heat 2 is a go at United artists (a branch of Amazon, but should get a cinema release imo)

Good morning all, I have a request for everyone who posts here.
When we post a review can we also state where you watched it (Cinema, Netflix, even DVD).
I see a lot of films I fancy watching (especially classics) but then have to find the bloody thing.
I am typing this as I google where to watch the 1934 version of Les MIserables......Criterion ;)
Good shout👍

Play Misty For Me [1971] 7/10
Dirty Harry gets stalked by Lucille Bluth. The California coast plays the starring role.

Victoria [2015] 7/10
A 2hr 15m, largely improvised one-take is an impressive achievement. Unfortunately it also hamstrings the film as it's in serious need of editing.

Munich. 2007. 6/10.
Dir: Spielberg.
157 mins.
DVD.

Another charity shop bound one that’s been in my “to be watched” pile for years.
An Oscar winning fictionalisation of the hunt for the Black September terrorists who took Israeli athletes hostage at the 1972 Olympics. Unfortunately it’s apparently as fact based as tosh like Braveheart etc which means I’ve knocked off a point. Otherwise a decent thriller. There’s a few faces I recognise but don’t know the names of, the French cop leading the hunt for The Jackal frinstance, and Blonde Bond with a dubious Aussie I think accent.
If it’s on the telly as you’re flicking through the nights programming give it a watch by all means (highly doubtful atm tbh) but I wadnt bother seeking it out.

The Seed of the Sacred Fig [2024] 9/10

2hr 40m of immersive, excruciating, escalating tension.
Courageous film-making from all involved (It was filmed in secret and smuggled out of the country to Germany where it was edited. The director was sentenced to 8 years in prison and fled Iran on foot over 28 days).

The story behind the making of this is intense:

A Woman Under The Influence - 9/10 - Gena Rowlands with one of the best perfomances you’ll see. She plays a crazy women with kids. The husband is just as bad. Really enjoyed it. (Criterion Channel)
