Brewster McCloud (1970) 4/10
Panned on first released, then elevated to cult classic status after Robert Altman became established as the great American director. I side with Quentin Tarantino, who called it 'the cinematic equivalent of a bird shitting on your head'.

The Big Clock (1948) 9/10
Ray Milland as a crime journalist investigating a murder for which he is the main suspect, but the real killer might be his own boss (typically eccentric brilliance from Charles Laughton).

Splitsville (2025) 5/10
Total mess of a film. Supposedly a modern screwball comedy, but the tone is all over the place, and there are way too many full-frontal views of the lead actor's prosthetic penis.

Absolutely loved The Big Clock. A fantastic film.

It’s the film that the Costner/Hackman film No Way Out was based on iirc? No Way Out was Costners finest fillum imho and about Hackmans tenth! Though Siesta or is it Fiesta has a superb soundtrack from Miles Davis
That’s the one. I’ll have to rewatch it because it’s many moons since I saw it, and probably didn’t appreciate it like I would now.

Sisters (1972)
Probably De Palma's best Hitchcock derived work, Sisters is a genuinely terrifying and unbearably suspenseful experience. Hitchcock buffs will undoubtedly enjoy catching references to Rear Window, Rope, and most obviously Psycho. Lots of fun, with plenty of humour to alleviate the tension. One of Margot Kidder's best performances in her pre-Lois Lane days.

Apologies if already posted but it came up as a 2025 film (says unrated so I assume it's a different version). Utter gash. Don't know where to start really

3/10 fuck knows what all these 6 or 7/10 were watching

Dunno how you finished it. I watched the first five minutes with the British TV actor being killed and turned it off as it looked dogshit.

The Trench - ww1 drama. The description in prime was from 2019 but when I looked it up it’s from 1999. I know Charlie human gets some stick for his accents but Daniel Craig’s attempt at (I think) scouse is dreadful. Danny dyer (shite) looks about 12, Ben wishaw cillian Murphy among the supporting cast. Pretty poor all round though 3/10. Blackadder goes forth did the final scene much better.

The Baltimorons (2025) 9/10
Christmas romcom that subverts the usual tropes. A struggling stand-up comedian in his 30s has a dental emergency on Christmas Eve, and ends up spending the evening with the 60-something female dentist. One of the most warm-hearted films I've seen this year.

Gilda (1948) 8/10
Rita Hayworth as the ultimate femme fatale, Glenn Ford as an American card shark trying to get by in Argentina. Undoubtedly a classic, though I find some of the character development to be a tad abrupt. Still, Rita Hayworth's entrance is one of the best in cinema history.

Sorcerer (1977) 10/10
I'd only seen it on VHS. The Criterion 4K is jaw-dropping. A masterpiece finally done justice.

God damn it, I own this on DVD and Blu Ray and I'm trying to hold off getting the 4k...

Bear in mind, I went from fuzzy pan-and-scan to pristine original-aspect-ratio: a massive leap. From Blu-ray to 4K won't be as spectacular.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the Criterion extras. The long interview with William Friedkin is full of insights - and his infamous irascibility is frequently on display.

Is that with Nicholas Winding Refn? I hear Billy gives him very short shrift

That's the one. It's a fun watch.

NWR: So you had to cast a star.
Friedkin: Roy Scheider wasn't a star.
NWR: But he was well known. You wouldn't have cast your neighbour.
Friedkin: Why would I cast my neighbour? My neighbour was a schmuck. I wouldn't give him a cup of sugar.

[Friedkin lost out on casting Marcello Mastroianni and Lino Ventura.]
NWR: And how did Universal/Paramount feel about that?
Friedkin: They didn't give a shit.
The whole thing is here:

I nearly started watching Sorcerer last night. I’ll give it a watch tonight.

Umbrellas of Cherbourg - not as good as I was expecting nor what I was expecting. I knew it was a musical but I didn’t know every single line was sung. 6/10
