Getting promoted - do we actually want it?

If we went up the wage bill would sore. The board want to keep costs low and sell players to fund the club every summer. We're a player farm not a sporting endeavour, Sadly some supporters are shell shocked from previous bad times that they think hovering around the play offs should be the extent of our ambitions too. Sad state of affairs.
Brilliant reading some of this thread now I have to say
Yes I want promotion but then I want KLD to sell up In the summer and get owners In who will take us to the next level because If we went to the premier under KLD we will go straight back down
LOL

Hindsight is great, isn't it?

If the thread title was 'getting promoted and 180m to spend, do we want it?', I reckon the responses would have been very different.

I don't think I posted in here at the time but I understood the caution, as our championship squad was miles off premier league level and going from an enjoyable season to a Southampton style 11 pointer would have been dreadful to watch, even if it boosted the club bank balance. No one saw us spending the way we have, and credit to the owner for funding the summer we have just had.

Thankfully its a non issue as we got promoted and we all know what happened next.

Not one person would have predicted we would spend £170 million
True, but a lot of people were absolutely convinced that we would do little, buy on the cheap and then KLD would pocket the parachute money when we came back down. There was no real evidence for either.

It's such an interesting question, because I honestly think hand on heart that when we were in the championship, I wasn't that keen on the Prem. Like I wanted us to be promoted, because I want us to win games but I dreaded it a bit too.

I liked that we had young local players getting in the team, which as we've seen this year, happens less in the Prem. The prem is also a much less even league in terms of money so I worried we'd be pumped every week and that would be hard to take after I'd got used to us playing better football and dominating games. And like the Championship has generally decent opposition teams who you could banter with, rather than the awful big 6 and mag fans, and the matches were mostly on 3pm at a Saturday.

Being offered a season of getting dicked by the worst clubs in football on 7 am on a tuesday and I wasn't that excited by it.

But, and I might change my mind again if we go on a slump, I think I was totally wrong.

Every game feels bigger in the prem, every point feels harder earned and more meaningful, the crowds are bigger and louder, the players we attract are better, the coverage in the media is miles better, we're in the sticker boo, we're in the fantasy football league, we're on the first page of the BBC. It feels like the big time, like this is where we should be. Young lads growing up now will want to support us, young players want to play for us.

It's just more exciting to be competing against the best, than not be. I'm really enjoying it so far.

I think a lot of my previous opinion was just sour grapes. Long may we stay here, it's awesome.

It is funny reading this thread, but I don't think we can honestly blame anyone for being sceptical in the past. Partly because the reality we are now seeing was just not within anyone's reasonable thinking at the time. Not even most peoples wildest dreams.
It's still early but it's fair to say KLD and Speakman have proved everyone wrong and even if we do end up going down, I don't think anyone can genuinely question they're commitment to giving it a go. Not only the squad but the marketing and the stadium improvements.

There’s being sceptical and there’s wanting to lose the play off final.

Turned over by Blackburn.

Honestly man do folk even watch games. They had 2 shots, 1 was blocked and 1 went in.

Going up would be a massive struggle, but you have to want to be promoted. That's the whole point of a pyramid system.
Thanks for the bump. Pleased I gave a sensible response

Cruel bump IMHO !
I think most fans were a bit nervous how we would go if promoted.
Personally I hoped we would win the playoffs .
I was a bit worried if we didnt take the opportunity when offered we might never get there again in my lifetime .Being in my late 70's one makes the most of every day .
I can't believe the money the owner spent and am now hoping for better days .
Imagine if we get to play in the Europe before I croak it .
You've got hopefully at least 10 years KLD 😁😁

This was weeks before the final. Was posted after I’d just watched us get beat 2-0 to Oxford, a 4th loss in a row (eventually 5).

As others have mentioned, easy to say in hindsight but none of us had any idea we’d go up and start signing world class players like Xhaka.

Name three games we dominated last season. I'm struggling.

Really? I think exactly the opposite. I think the majority of fans in the lower leagues hated us and now, unless we're playing against them, every almost fan in the league, (apart from the obvious), is rooting for us.

I even knaa some mags that are rooting for us. Much as it pains them.

I said to my mate after Forest game that (given where we were 5 months ago) it seems absolutely crazy that l will be disappointed if we don’t take at least a point from Man U at Old Trafford.

I’m ‘only’ early 70’s but 100% share the sentiment. Of course there are many (well spread out) highlights but has it ever looked better overall in the last 60 years? I think not.
