Competing to be the NE top dogs

Is it just Sunderland where our fans are overly negative about us? And also arse lick Newcastle to kingdom come?

There’s no reason why we can’t finish above them this season (not that it matters, but it is the context of the thread) and I can Gauruntee you now our players will have the belief they can aswell

Its probably about a 2% chance mate. We are almost certainly going to finish in the bottom 5 or so. It would mean an absolutely catastrophic season for the Saudis

Think we should be comparing the Sunderland of now to the Sunderland of 8 years ago and not them up the road.

You couldn’t have 2 clubs who are ran so differently.

Time will tell which one will benefit more in the long term but the Saudis won’t be there forever and will be interesting after that to see how well the club was managed within without an endless supply of cash.

An excellent post.
There is obviously space in the immediate region for two top teams but as Cloughie said to Revie about his Leeds appointment, 'I wanted to do what you did Don but I wanted to do it better'. 'You can understand that can't you'?
We can be better than Newcastle on and off the pitch and signs are, we are heading in the right direction.

Thanks. The sentiment of the post seems to be lost on some, who I think have just read the the title and nothing else

That’s the f***ing spirit mate.

Pleased the highly rated new lads don’t think that negatively.

Its just realism mate. Im right behind the lads and I think we've been incredible so far. Just would be a bit silly to suggest we will be finishing above a state owned club worth three quarters of a billion.

They can’t just plough the money into the squad. The way we are ran appears to be so much better than just ploughing money into it anyway. Look at the mentality of the squad and the future potential of all the players.

Money spent on transfers doesn’t mean success

They should be winning their next 5 games, think it'll be a different picture after that.

Besides, our season shouldn't be defined on how we do relative to them. The most likely thing to happen is for them to finish comfortably above us, and probably have the better of the derbies too. That reflects where we are on our journey, and the fact that they've been bankrolled by the dirtiest money on planet earth.

Easier said than done I know, but we'd do well to care less about that rivalry. They're not the club we all grew up alongside anymore. Newcastle United is little more PR wing of the House of Saud these days, they don't deserve us playing along with the charade.

We were indeed but it didn’t look sustainable at the time and wasn’t

That season SKP scored more than the rest of our squad put together (30 league goals from a team total of 59)

To my knowledge that’s never been done before and never will again

This teams defence and midfield is superior to that team, clearly the strike force is nowhere near SKP and Sir Niall

If and when we add the next layer to our attacking force with another creative player and a better striker, then I think we can really kick on.

We’re averaging less than 1.0xG per game which, despite what people might think about the stat, shows we’re not creating an awful lot.

We’re built on brilliant foundations at the back and a team that is unbelievably well drilled. The next layer is to start creating chances.

Under Reidy we were second in the league at Xmas and had a chance of going top . If we can achieve that type of consistency we can talk about being top dogs , until then we are just giving them daft twats ammunition to rip the piss out of us .
Yet I wonder who's genuinely more concerned about December 13th right now.
Us or them?

Newcastle will comfortably finish above us this season, and I couldn't care less. It would exceptionally embarrassing for then if they didn't.

It should be them atm, but when it comes round people will completely forget about the league table and it just becomes a game between 2 sides.

They’ve got a squad worth an absolute fortune, champions league and we’re a newly promoted team. The expectation is they beat us, but anything can happen.

What I do know is it’s going to be 90 minutes of torture hoping our brilliant defence can continue to be just that.

We're competing for Europe, couldn't care less about them. Mags I know can't stop talking about us though, they're gutted by our start. I actually think it'll add to the pressure there if they don't start winning asap.

Strange how all the mags I work with have a lesser opinion of their squad than Sunderland fans on here mind.

The tides are turning

Squad cost and wage bill generally points to league position. We can make some progress to close the gap if we keep doing what we do though. Just enjoy it and dont compare ourselves to them.

Yep - which is the most difficult piece of the jigsaw

We do have a number of players who can improve a lot going forward, going to be fascinating to watch
