Competing to be the NE top dogs

Crystal Pal ?
Yes the only team that isn’t in the bottom half. We’ve been unbelievably lucky with the fixtures and this continues for the next two .
If we can get to New Year and still be top half , then I will get excited .

I’ve been holding off on saying this, because it’s Sunderland and we all know how quickly things can change, but without getting too far ahead of ourselves, I genuinely think we have an opportunity to flip a script that may have been easy to accept just a short while ago. When the mags got taken over by the Saudis and became 'the richest club in the werrrld', I remember the chat on here at the time and I felt the same. Loads of concern that we would be left behind forever, we were in League One so it wasn’t hard to feel like it. I remember posts like, 'that’s it, we’ll never be able to compete with them again', and, 'all the top young players in the area will be sucked up by their academy now'. I would love to look back at that thread if can find it.

Yet here we are, and it feels like we’re on the cusp of building something sustainable and potentially long-term. A proper identity, signing young, hungry players who want to prove themselves, who clearly get the club and the city. Players with character, not just ability, and importantly, we’re giving youth a chance. There’s a pathway here, which you can see from afar. From the outside, the mags are starting to look like a bit of a soulless machine, all cash, no connection. There’s a growing respect for how we’re doing things from fans outside the region who are noticing it, which I witness firsthand as an exile. If you’re a talented young player coming through in the North East right now, and someone asked which academy you’d rather be in, where would you point them?

We’re on the rise, doing it properly, and if we keep going like this, all those fears will be long gone or potentially even reversed. It's crazy to think back to this time and look at what KLD and the team have done in such a short space of time when at one point all felt lost.

Let's stick it right up them. HWTL.
An excellent post.
There is obviously space in the immediate region for two top teams but as Cloughie said to Revie about his Leeds appointment, 'I wanted to do what you did Don but I wanted to do it better'. 'You can understand that can't you'?
We can be better than Newcastle on and off the pitch and signs are, we are heading in the right direction.

Is it just Sunderland where our fans are overly negative about us? And also arse lick Newcastle to kingdom come?

There’s no reason why we can’t finish above them this season (not that it matters, but it is the context of the thread) and I can Gauruntee you now our players will have the belief they can aswell

Half of our fixtures have been against sides who qualified for Europe last season with two of them being away fixtures.

Why try to play down our good start?
I’m not playing down anything . We’ve done extremely well but talk of being top dogs is for the birds . The mags can probably put out a team where virtually every player is more expensive than our most expensive player .

This is where it starts getting childish as fuck . Being realistic is not licking the mags hoop . Grow the fuck up .

But nearly all had decent results before playing us and have continued after us.The thing is all games in the prem are difficult,we will have to get used to draws and accept them .In the lower leagues draws were regarded as defeats ,not the case up here in the Prem.

Enjoy us being above the Mags it’ll be at least 2 more games before that changes which is great! But they are a strong side and will be in or around the European places. Didn’t get carried away we have one goal, 17th or above!
I do tend to agree

But I don’t think our manager and players would. It feels like they have a great mindset to try and compete and get something from every game (obviously we won’t but that’s not the point). Many promoted teams have appeared to target certain games and accept defeat in many others, I don’t think we will be doing that
I’m absolutely delighted . I’ve just seen it all before and won’t get carried away after 6 games .
With respect, I’ve been supporting the club for 50 years and I don’t think I’ve seen us this competitive in the top league apart from under Reidy

Under Reidy we were second in the league at Xmas and had a chance of going top . If we can achieve that type of consistency we can talk about being top dogs , until then we are just giving them daft twats ammunition to rip the piss out of us .

Agree,Xhaka said what convinced him to come was KLD flying over and laying out his plans for the years ahead.

We were indeed but it didn’t look sustainable at the time and wasn’t

That season SKP scored more than the rest of our squad put together (30 league goals from a team total of 59)

To my knowledge that’s never been done before and never will again

This teams defence and midfield is superior to that team, clearly the strike force is nowhere near SKP and Sir Niall

Nowt wrong with wanting good things for your club, naturally that includes bettering your local rivals. I don't see a problem in expressing that, and everyone starts the season equal.

It's the hope I can stand.
