Northern trains

London and the Southern tocs get new longer trains

The north east get 40 year old 2 car units

It’s called the north / south divide.

There isn’t much Northern can do, they’ve only got so many trains to go around

Surely using their brains though even with limited trains sending a two carriage at absolute peak time is bad planning. Everyone knows the few trains on a Saturday game from around 11am to 2ish are gonna be rammed. I use this service every match day and use it two or three times a week average on non match day and see plenty of four carriage trains in service on this line. It’s mental they obviously have the stock to have four carriages on this line as I see them through the week. Sending a two carriage for the first train after the game or the main peak train before is boarding on incompetent. They clearly don’t give a fuck as many have complained an nothing has changed this despite clearly having four carriages trains on this line during the week.

Depend who they is really. The North East just needs more trains, but I'm just not sure Northern can do much about that. Btw all the 4 car trains were on the Durham Coast Line on Sunday (had a look before as I was curious if they were stupid and had things roaming around Darlington) bar the 2 on the Ashington trains but they have their own problems.

Not sure what else they could really do, like you could move one of the trains before the match until after, but is that any better? I'm not sure.

Lack of investment while it's all spent in the South is sadly the real problem tbh as Manchester is just as bad - if not worse.
With respect mate, it’s down to awful planning by northern that they don’t have the 4 carriage service available at peak times. It’s available on the same line during awfully quiet times. We have had this problem for years and years. There’s no way in that time they haven’t had the resources or chance to fix the problem they’re just not interested. It costs them as a company hundreds if not thousands of pounds every time it happens because nobody gets a ticket checked, we have people on this thread who can’t even remember the last time they paid for a ticket.

Since I’ve been using this line for around two years now since moving down here the amount of money they must have lost out on would’ve paid for a train 😂 it’s been happening forever so god knows how much in total they’ve missed out on. I was still paying just out of principle at the start as I don’t like bumping fares but the service they provide is farcical. I missed the Brentford game because the train before had been cancelled meaning about two people could get on at horden. I’ve started changing my match day now around getting an earlier train than I would normally just so I don’t risk not getting on.

They surely have enough feedback and data by now from the public and from drivers and workers who must absolutely dread having those shifts. They get stick even though it’s got nowt to do with them. I wouldn’t mind but the bus service from horden to Sunderland is also shite taking an age and also can’t be relied upon. They’ve stopped the service that went from horden to Sunderland too so you need to get a bus to Peterlee to catch the x6 (but that doesn’t run in Sundays) or the 61 that’s takes around 80mins to get to town or one of the Arriva buses that also goes around the world.

As a townie born and bread i used to scoff at people from the outskirts and Durham villages that it’s easier to get to Newcastle than Sunderland but that shockingly is the case. I can get to Newcastle on one of the express services the same time if not quicker than getting to Sunderland especially on a Sunday when the x6 doesn’t run. No wonder lots drive I can’t imagine relying on public transport around here if your job is a distance away.

We definitely do have a huge issue with the fact we're in the North and the government simply don't care about the public transport in the area. That being said, Northern really don't help themselves one bit. The Horden station even being built is laughable because you can't physically get on a train from there on it's busiest days, the train is literally full before it gets there.

How many is "all"? Genuine question.

And this is my biggest annoyance with it!

They’ve done nothing to really change the service offered over the last 10 years @Zimba

Are Northern really pushing for a better service? I’m not so sure

Nah no arguments, do they try and get things better? - probably not but at the same time Northern has been ran on a minimum cost basis for years compared to the likes of LNER which are profitable so growth exists hence the new trains etc.

You have to remember though the trains run right across to Carlisle / Nunthorpe so if you have a train on before the game, then it's going to be off in Cumbria after the game so you need a fair few trains.

Not sure if it's been posted on here but things might be a bit better after December as supposedly the lines being split at Newcastle and the fast trains are going upto hourly. Where the units are coming from - god knows.

Seemed to be 5 on Sunday, 2 on the Northumberland Line, 3 on the Tyne Valley / Durham Coast. Not sure where the rest were but seems like there was an open day at Heaton which was announced months ago so seems like the match being moved has screwed them over a bit aswell.

And there lies the problem 90% of the time nobody uses them.
Not the case I use the line a fair bit, used it at all different time too the early morning one is always well subscribed as people go to work in Newcastle and Sunderland. Just like any line it will have its slow times but match day isn’t it when its dangerously over subscribed.

Just saw the north east has the highest cancellations on the rail than anywhere else with Sunderland Hartlepool being in the worst hit. Guess which line that is.

It has to be down to a lack of, or absence of, regulation, otherwise their business model would have collapsed by now.

Are Northern Rail paid to run the service regardless of the numbers of passengers using the service perhaps? Are they penalised for what must be thousands of complaints?

Its absolutely diabolical. I've completely given up getting off the train at Horden to visit my sister, because it's odds on that I'd not be able to get back on to go to the match.

Played golf at Hartlepool many a time and seen next to no one on the rattler .
This makes it all the more reason they don’t plan a bit better by making sure it’s only two carriages at quieter times and four at peak times, they could be raking it in on matchdays. Instead they miss out. Would be like a pub in the town opening during the week then not opening on a matchday.

How hard can it be to organise trains in 2025? Man landed on the moon 56 years ago ffs. They say they don’t have rolling stock, how long can it take to manufacture and produce train carriages? The railways symbolise everything wrong with this country. Things are going backwards rather than forwards.

😂😂 Are you actually suggesting we get “new” train carriages. We get second or third hand carriages passed on from the south when they are done with them

How much can it cost to produce them? We aren’t talking a major innovation in 2025. I’ve been on trains down south, 7 carriages, 2 would have been sufficient. No joined up thinking in this country over anything - trains, government, NHS - country is an absolute mess.

Is there a link with info about the December upgrades mate?

The carriages would pay for themselves in time as more people would be able to actually use them and the conductors would be able to get round and check tickets.
