New Villa stand gets the green light

West Midland metro is planning a £100 million extension to serve the proposed Birmingham City FC sports village, public money for an American owner.

The replacement for the container depot next to Old Trafford will be provided by the private sector (at Port Salford close by and at St Helens) but remodelling of road, rail and metro provision for the redevelopment around Old Trafford will undoubtedly come from the public purse and will cost a fortune.

They should tell that scumbag Ratcliffe to dip into the tax free earnings he has stashed away in Monaco to pay for it.
You’re forgetting he’s sacked 947 kitchen staff since he took over at Man United mind.

I know it’s about another club but not everything has to be about abusing what looks like a sensible long term capital project. The PL continues to escalate around the world and the riches follow. You need to invest in all aspects of your club to compete into the medium term.

We still benefit for the AOL which is above and beyond what most clubs at this level have. These are the things they can help persuade players, managers, staff etc to choose your club as opposed to another one especially when it’s a marginal call.

They are mainly getting this expansion because they are a host for the Euros, such a shame we missed out or we'd likely be doing the same. It is predicted hosting will bring 190 million to the local area.

Be interesting to understand how they are framing the request for public funding. Potentially opens the door for others to follow suit.
Public funding for private developments is nothing new, the argument is they will bring in millions to the local economy and stimulate growth/jobs, which results in increased tax revenue.

£100M for one stand, shows how inflation is kicking in.
They are claiming it will return an extra 13 million per year in revenue, so it won't take long at all to pay off and the cost to service it should easily be met. No brainer really.

This is the main reason we need to expand, build big concourses with bars, restaurants, and other recreation and entertainment venues that people will spend money in all week long, so we can significantly raise our revenue and compete in spending with other clubs.

If the mags extend the Gallowgate by 7,000 - 10,000 it's probably going to cost well over £200M. Strawberry Place, the road that runs from the bottom of St James Street right along the back of the stand will need to be relocated or somehow moved underground and housed underneath the stadium. St James Metro station will probably need to be moved too. Hilarious that this is their easiest / cheapest way to increase capacity. Everything else is a nightmare of planning and insane costs.
Not sure how public it is, nor how much it actually means it may happen, but I know they have submitted plans to build a new, larger ground, on Leazes park.

Good chance it's just hedging bets, getting pre approval etc while they decide what they want to do, but a good friend works for the Police in a relatively senior role and been in meetings as part of very early discussions.

Game has been moved to a Sunday night and is on tv hence the slower ticket sales. Palace have also sent back the upper tier of the away end which are on sale to Villa fans. We wouldn’t sell out every week at 50k unless we were doing really well but we’d sell out enough to make it worth while.
Haven't you got a massive season ticket waiting list? 40K I read?

Yes nothing formal submitted by the mags to ncc yet, apparently. As soon as something is a call for a referendum will be lodged by those in opposition to such a development on the park. It's almost a year since the club last commented.

It's a grade II registered park with special historic interest. The listing designation protects the park. The park itself is the centre of the Leazes Conservation Area. This designation protects the park and its historic surroundings, listed buildings and structures. The conservation area has 59 Grade I and 105 Grade II listed buildings, and the park itself has several listed structures. The Friends of Leazes Park is a registered charity dedicated to the "protection, preservation, maintenance and enhancement" of the park.

It's almost as if the Saudi's want to delay the stadium indefinitely and get tied up in years and years of legal wrangles. Rather than spend £2B+ on a new ground.

I am well aware of public monies being used for private developments.
It being used to line the pockets of the richest club in the country seems somewhat wrong to me.
Take it you would be ok for the same to happen for any new stadium at Newcastle?
