ECB admits the 16.4 has brought no new fans

There's plenty of scope for trying to get kids interested outside of that. Especially given that games during the week are played on an evening.

I do think that we could and can have a very successful T20 competition involving the counties. As I've mentioned many times, the Blast drew record crowds in 2019. Maybe if the ECB had put as much time and effort into that as they have The Hundred it would have got even stronger. They are bribing England players to play in The Hundred and subsidising the overseas players. Imagine if they'd done the same The Blast!

And like I've said before, I agree with you that short form is the best way to get kids into the game now but I certainly don't think that should mean zero red ball cricket is played in August.

I have no issue with The Blast at all.

T20 blast finals day is my favorite day in the cricketing calendar.

And like I said before I was praising it to hilt well before ‘ The Hundred’ even thought off while others were calling it ‘slogging’ ‘ not proper cricket’ etc etc.

Who incidentally happen to now say it’s always been a good competition;)

So no issue with your general point at all.

Personally though imo to gain maximum exposure for a T20 tournament and get kids involved the best time would be the school holidays in a designated window.

Other sports may have games going on at once but IPL, Big Bash and SA20 all have live games as stand alone events on that day and it proven to be a success

but thats the problem, the tv companies do want every game of a tournament in a short window to be televised, every premier league game is televised if you know where to look, and even with sky they show more and more each year, live sport is a massive money spinner for TV now, and they dont want simultaneous games as it dilutes the viewing numbers,

Why does every game in a domestic competition need to be televised? I've honestly not heard anyone on here or in real life say that they want that to be a thing apart from @Voice of fair play. It can be argued that too much of a sport on TV can reduce interest. You regularly hear people say there's too much football on TV

Even if we meet in the middle and say that a game on TV every day is needed then that was perfectly doable with the Blast.

Great that you have no issue with the blast .
Whether people call it slogging or not proper cricket is simply personal opinion and irrelevant to the issue.
.Inescapable fact is that this current tournament "stand alone in a designated window"is losing money year on year and attendances and Tv figures are falling year on year on.
That's surely indicative that there isn't an appetite for this structure in England.
Don't let facts get in the way of your personal agenda.

I try and avoid the Hundred in the media - highlights, match reports etc. I don't want to feed the beast. However, I thought I'd have a look at the comments section on a couple of the BBC match reports and see what people are saying. Almost exclusively it is people saying how much they hate it.

I'm not taking any hope from that. It seems to be here to stay. But this article has got it spot on. The Hundred is an empty, shallow gimmick with no roots, substance or history behind it. Given it's marketed at those with little knowledge of cricket, how long will they stick with the gimmick before they move on to the next shiny thing?

Then riddle me this, why have they just started the 16.4 when the Premier League starts next week?

Monday to Friday during the day there is no football. The only difference is that in June the kids are at school and can't watch cricket, in August they can. See many families at Edgbaston this year? No, they’re all at school/work.

You know what families can still watch in June because its played in the evenings? T20 and 16.4. And thats why the vandals have insisted we shut down cricket in August for this farce. Can't have the best forms of the game accessible to watch, or else they'll realise the 16.4 is a far inferior game.

TBH I'm bored arguing about this now, the war is lost. No more cricket in the summer in England, for ever.

I think even the 16.4's biggest fans know deep down that they're sacrificing domestic and test cricket, they just don't give a shit. Big Mac and large fies for every single meal, yum yum.

Was at Hetton Aldi on thursday evening ( around 5pm ) and there were loads of kids playing cricket at Hetton Lyons . Really good to see

Definately....im tempted to say that those who do also have a very active role in the community / push their club outside of cricket.....Bournmoor like Hetton Lyons seem to have similar success

Yeh,you can add Whitburn and South Shields to that list. Pass South Shields ground most days of the school holidays and there's small aside games of varying ages going on. Got to be better than their watching it either at a ground or on tv.

Every game is live in YouTube. Via the counties YouTube channels.

Every single ball of county cricket is live on YouTube.

Don't you get it yet??

Why watch sky or pay for it?? The England games????

Then YouTube search who we are playing and watch for free via our oppenants YouTube country.


The blast finals day last year I had a choice of over 200 Indian channels showing it live. They have no restrictions and yes it was sky's coverage.

People still pay for live sport in 2025??

Kids don’t seem to be interested in the T20 judging by how they behave at Durham (running around the stands and not watching the game, parents handing them YouTube to watch instead) and the adults… a fair few of them would rather queue at the bar than watch the game so what did they think was going to happen?

At least they are there. How many kids do you see at county championship games?? 0000000.00.

In fact does anybody under 60 thinking of it.

Yes t20 is boring now. 12 overs and hour etc etc.

When it first started it was great 5 quid and 16 overs and hour minimum.

Now it's just slower over rate than yesterday matches.

Simple why it's killed itself.
