Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

Not sure what the problem is, you just put the code in and how long you're parking and that's it
May be an age thing.
Or a work thing for me.
On my job I have dozens of log ins, passwords, Authenticator apps on the phone etc.

I realise that remote access to medical records requires confidentiality but some of these places are more difficult to get into than that secure room in Mission Impossible. I’ve come to detest the whole thing. So when something happens like when I’m home and meeting my niece for an hour or two at the stack and I park behind and not only am I getting bum raped for a fee just to leave the car in an almost empty chunk of land behind the promenade I now have to download an app and fiddle and fart about on my phone and create yet another log in and password for a place I will use only once on a brief trip home.

For some people I suppose once they get the parking app it’s a convenience but I have a pet hate against this kind of stealth tax. It’s not like a car park needs a load of money for its upkeep. It’s just yet another way to squeeze money for nothing. We’ve come to accept this in this day and age with endless subscriptions (many self-renewing) and stealthy ways to part you from your dough. Parking fees, INconveninece charges for tickets, security tax on flight tickets that’s been there since 9/11. Peteol surcharges on rental cars that’s been there since it went up ten years ago, service charges on restaurant bills, constantly being asked to tip whenever you use a card - at Subway!! The list goes on!

Contrast that with when I went to get my hair cut at Fagan’s (RIP!) and parked on that long thin car park behind Mary Street it was free after 3 pm. Result!

I’m probably not alone in thinking nothing of dropping a load of cash on something other people might find frivolous but then rankle over having a to pay a few quid for something trivial. 😁😁

Last year when we were home we stayed at the Hilton. It has its own car park but it was often full so we’d park in the stadium car park which was closer to the hotel and less roads to cross with the bairn plus easier to push suitcases etc. Nobody bothered us and we weren’t alone in doing so. I suppose we’d have to pay if we did that now?

Anyway - how about that bridge eh?😁

Definitely some costs with having a car park like i imagine theres some insurances etc and then various other on charges

I swallowed my pride on this a while back now by actually downloading the apps (Ringo). Much easier now, as it means no clarting about on the website and then inevitably not knowing my password so having to reset that, go into emails and all that shite. Still prefer ones that take cash as well as app because it’s an opportunity to get rid of some shrapnel if you’ve had some in your wallet for ages.

People with that mindset wouldn't be interested in going out anyway. People pay to park in every city in the country, it's hardly an issue and won't make a jot of difference to demand. There's a shed load of new parking provided within a short walk from the bridge and new development as well.
Disagree with you on this one, slightly out of town retail parks with free parking tend to be much busier than town centres where people have to pay. Lots of people simply resent paying to park their car and will go elsewhere where where it’s free. I can understand charging when it comes to parking all day but for two or three hours while people are shopping or going to a restaurant/ bar is a massive own goal.

I still don't understand it when they do that, doesn't make sense

This isn't competing with the out of town retail parks though, it's a different offering and one you can only experience in the city centre.

The tight arses who refuse to pay a couple of quid for parking won't be types going to Sheepfolds for a 6 quid pint or 20 quid meal anyway, it's a different customer.

There's still plenty of other cheap/free places to park in the city centre and it's surrounds too.

i dont get this people harping on about parking charges ruining business. Its utter nonsense. Its a couple of quid ffs. Ive just spent 2 grand getting the car fixed. Its about 100quid a month petrol. Point is if u can afford to own a car then parking charges will make no difference to your habits. If you are driving to the galleries from Roker instead of going to the town you are spending more on petrol than you are saving on parking. Plus the time it takes and miles you put on your motor. Its just a non argument

Some of them probably think of it as a victory over the Council.

Talking of the council....i was out for a run at 5 oclock in the morning last week up the sea front and follow the bike path to the bridge and ran past a fella hooded up with a rucksack sticking the 'corrupted council' stickers on all the lamposts

Removed one of his pieces of handiwork a few weeks ago. On the back was that letter that sometimes does the rounds telling of police and council corruption. Must be the same bloke.

Mental.

ah I did not know that. It’s actually slightly reassuring to know it’s the same looper
