Away fans downstairs?

Sheepfolds development wil put paid to the idea of away fans at the south of the stadium.
And the new bridge.

A huge proportion of our fans will now be approaching the stadium on foot through that route. The away fans will never ever be relocated back to the South stand and I don't understand why any of our fans think they will or would want them to be.

The new bridge alone kills the idea stone dead, unless people want the new bridge blocked for access to Sunderland fans either side of every match while the plod get the away fans in and out?

They'll be housed in the North Upper for the foreseeable. NP want them up there and I suspect they'll just reopen the front section and narrow the segregation around the NW upper.

The precedent has been set by the mags and while that exists we won't have to change either.

Agree with this the premier league will struggle to argue against the police, they’re going nowhere

Hopefully keep them up there.spent a fortune upgrading hospitality in the north where the appeal is just walking out to the seats(as opposed to having to go upstairs) Northumbria's finest will also be keen to keep them there as well I suspect.

Surely the same proportion of fans coming over the water from the direction of town though?
Why would they close the bridge either side of the game for away fans to get away? Apart from Boro and the Mags, there's never any blocked access.

Because it’s so hard to get away tickets in the PL, I think the club and SAG are a bit happier that we won’t see the issues witnessed in L1 and the championship.

That said, if they do get moved in the coming years, it will be to the NEC

Yeah as I mentioned there will always be a debate. But when it comes down to it NP will be pushing to keep them in the North upper, so this won't change as long as the mags have the ability to house away fans in the Leazes upper.

I agree mate plus whilst we are in the PL, it’s almost certain the issues we have seen before we disappear.

Especially when most wanted them moved out of south stand, short memories.
Because people are short sighted, they didn't take into account the effect moving them would have on the atmosphere.

I noticed a significant drop in decibel and frequency of chants. I'd rather have empty seats on camera, than a drop in atmosphere.

Neutrals can tell the empty seats are because of the away fans, but they will will will will blame us for the poor atmosphere.

Away fans won’t be moved whoever we are selling out imo. We will also get dispensation on safety grounds to keep them upstairs. One poster said we’d get more capacity if we moved them downstairs, but how many seats would have to be taken out on two sides for segregation now?
RE: atmosphere, if we can’t get the stadium rocking when sold out for any home premier league game then god help us.

Keep them where they are.

there is no need to ever have empty seats in the lower bowl, the away end could be on a sliding scale. If it looks like the away team will sell 1,000 tickets, we open up blocks for 2,000 home fans next to it. Cannot be hard to organise that.

I agree the away fans taking up 3000 seats in the lower isn’t great .

I’d suggest doing something like Manchester City do , split them North upper and north lower. Give clubs the choice of the maximum allocation or just the upper tier and we sell the lower

We don't need god to help us, we can just move them down to the lower bowl so A. We can hear them as sound doesn't travel down well, and B. Gives our rowdy section someone to chant back and forth with, which in turns often encourages the quieter sections to join in.

Otherwise we are relying on what happens on the pitch to give us something to chant about, that could be few and far between depending how well we perform.

I have sat in SAG meetings at SAFC in the past. The police get what they want, simple as that. It does not matter what the club, the local authority building control, the ambulance service or the fire brigade say. The police get the final say.

Putting away fans in the South stand now would be a logistical nightmare for the police. The North stand is close access to the away fans buses and a quick and easy exit out onto the A19 using the 1231. If they were in the South stand they would either have to march all 3,000 away fans around the ground to the other end or block off the whole of the South of the stadium (where most Sunderland fans are headed).

Its a rediculous thought that anyone would ever consider doing something this stupid. Thruth be known, we got the location of the away fans wrong from day one but have now corrected that error. Its never going to change now. If they come down to the lower bowl it will be at the North end.
