Jordan Henderson (signed for Brentford)

If we're still looking at 8 more there's going to have to be some freebies in there. I reckon this could be where our Prem experience comes from a Tomiyasu or Lindelof or someone to boost numbers. As daft as it sounds, in a world cup year, I don't know we could give henderson the minutes he'd be after. The right sort of character you want around the group though. Perfect type of player to come on and see out a lead.

‘8 more’. says who?

I remember David Bruce saying something recently about the Club’s new marketing strategy as being “Surprise and Delight”. I wonder if this new mantra has bled into the footballing side a little bit.

Whilst we all know the benefits of keeping our transfer business moving along quietly and not in the public-eye, I've enjoyed as a fan not knowing who is coming next. Adingra yesterday for example coming out of the blue.

As a member of the Bring Hendo Home camp, part of me hopes that the recent flurry of articles is to turn the fans off the scent. I have been manifesting a surprise reveal of Hendo in our new home shirt since the first intimations that he may leave Ajax. It just makes absolute sense in my head.

Although I'm probably just delusional.

Seems like this is a non starter. Club weren’t interested before and the reports are they aren’t interested now.

Shame but we move on. He’ll end up at Forest or Fulham I reckon - solid mid table team pushing (or in Europe)

I would be a no, but you're missing his value of the pitch as a passionate fan with buckets of experience he can impose on the youngster we're bringing in. Hee'd be a coach/occassional player for me but I'm not convinced that's what he'll be after with playing for England still.
He’s not going to start 30 odd games for any premier league side on account of his age. He’s got to be realistic about that.

Tuchel has alluded to the fact he is picking Henderson for many of the same reasons we’re advocating his return. His leadership.

8 ??? where is that from

100% this, he would be a squad player competing for minutes, he’s been a starter his whole career, so he’s not coming to Sunderland to do that.

I actually think Porto with his old Ajax manager would be a good move for him.
He’s going to be a squad player wherever he goes at this stage of his career and he knows that. He’s not going to start every game - he physically can’t keep up with that anymore either

Let’s be honest, none of the movers & shakers at the club KLD, KS, FG or RLB have any attachments, emotional, historical, or otherwise with Henderson. I’m in no doubt that they will make a decision based on what’s in the best interests of the club. I’m in the BHH camp for what it’s worth.

I'd be happy to have him in the squad, but I'm guessing he wants more than that. Sentiment and football rarely mix, so I could see the club sounding him out with an option of a year or two as a squad player, but they’ll have no intentions of holding back the players they've brought in to start Henderson each week.

Not being the main man is something that Henderson himself will have to come to terms with, as many players at the back end of their careers have to do.

He could probably cope with starting most games for a team like us, who are not in Europe and will probably field weakened sides in cup ties.

he started most of his games for Ajax last year and played the full 90 for a lot. A lot saying what if we are behind what can he do?
I ask what if we sneak a goal against a good side and need a steady head to see out the last 20 min??

I don’t think it is. Because Leadbittet was finished Hendo isn’t. You’re basing your view on the fact Hendo is finished. There is no evidence to that effect.
I doubt anyone expects him to be at what was his peak, but conversely no one expects a passenger.
One size does not fit all. Leave it to the experts to work out.
He’s less of a risk that many a player with history of injuries
To start, I never expressed any view that Henderson was already finished. I merely pointed out that at 35 he will likely be at some point soon.

If he still has legs, and they last the season, he will be a good signing.

The view on Leadbitter was he would still be a top player at league 1 level, I don't think he was (others disagree). It is exactly the same gamble with Henderson, just a higher level. Henderson's level has been significantly higher than a newly promoted Prem club, but he is at the stage of his career where he might come along for one last swan song.

Denying that a 35 year old is nearing the end of his career and that age is a risk is mad.

Also, as you say, 'let the experts work it out'. Rather than jumping in and misrepresenting a view,

Henderson could provide the experience that makes the difference between staying up or going down though. I don't think anyone would argue that he isn't past is best and also wouldn't get in any top 6 team. But for a team who will likely be fighting for their lives, I don't think it's too much of a gamble to take him on a free and offer him something like a 1 year deal with an automatic 1 year extension if we stay up.

If the wages were right, I would take the risk as he is the exact sort of person you want around the dressing room.

I am just fully prepared for the fact that it might be a season too far. Some players can do a job at 35 at prem level. Not many though.

I'd agree, but I think the thing that goes in Henderson's favour is that he has been a model pro throughout his career. He got to where he was through hard work and dedication, more than pure natural ability. It's these types of players who tend to be able to squeeze out a couple of extra seasons at the top level due to looking after their bodies.

Exception might be a league with a slower pace for a team expected to keep possession. I see Porto was rumoured and that could be ideal. There are also tax incentives for foreigners moving there which might apply (which I suspect could be another issue in him coming here).
