SOL expansion

How come The Mags dont have a 2k segregation? Away fans at the "shit tip" are virtually located in the same position as The Sol.
Never had any issues in the prem with the front rows, but club been burnt by league one knackers , should sell them imo and if issues then just move them next season can’t be having that many seats empty

Is it not because of the tighter budgets in league 1 for stewards, it’s a ridiculous situation if there’s still demand for season tickets and 2000 seats that have to sit empty

There wont be 2,000 seats empty, if they don't use the bottom 5 rows your looking at 900 seats empty and there wont be a big segregation between the away/home supporters between P22 & P20.

Even as a second division club we used to get crowds of over 60,000 .So imagine what we could get if we got a sniff of success.Oh don’t forget 50% of our catchment area is whater.
We got relegated into Div 2 for the 1st time in 1958 and I've been looking at the numbers for league games. Post war, we've got 60,000 plus 10 times in the league, 6 times in the 40s, 2 in the 50s, 2 in the 60s and 3 of the 10 were against the mags.

The 2 in the 60s both happened in 1962-63 while in Div 2 so not really a regular occurrence that I thought it was as the last time we'd got 60,000 was against the mags in 1954/55 season. Our highest league game of 62,420 was obviously against the mags but the other game was 62,138 against Stoke.

Looking a little bit deeper I see Stoke were top and it was Bank Holiday Friday April 12th. We were at home again the very next day against Portsmouth and the crowd was 35,356. These are the next highest attendances that season and just shows how games would fluctuate in attendance.

We missed out on promotion in 62/63 due to GD as we lost the final game at home in front of 47,955 to Chelsea, who went up instead, when only a draw was required for promotion! We got promoted the next season and spent the next 6 seasons in Div 1 til the 70s but we never got 60,000 again after those 2 games in the 60s. We got over 50,000 10 more times in the 60s but only once in the 70s and never again as Roker was being reduced in capacity.

I hoyed the post war league game numbers into a quick graph and this is what it looks like. You can see from the early years just how much the attendances varied. I can add years etc if anyone is interested though I think it's clear to see when the SOL appeared, where it was expanded, where we got relegated, the 10 seasons in the PL, the relegation into L1, COVID and then the climb back up to PL. You can also see the 2 games from 1962/63 in the 2nd box from left and the gap prior to the mag game in 1954/55. Bear in mind, back then cup games got bigger attendances as this is just league and there won't include those sneaking in one way or another.

I can think of at least 3 times we had over 50k in the 70's.

League games, or are you including the cup games? Look at the first and last sentence in all my waffle. The single league game was 1974/75 against Bolton late in the season when we got promoted back to Div 1. I think the cup games were in the FA Cup Man City 5th/Luton 6th rounds in 1973 and Crystal Palace 6th round 1976.

I missed the mags as I included them in the 60s seasons as it was the 1969/70 season and we played them March 27th

We'd fill 60,000 nee bother these days though if we could just get some top half action in the Premier League. Though given the money in the game these days that's fucked it then it's a little bit harder than it used to be.

Yes I meant all games sorry. Also we defo had more than 50k inside Roker when we beat West Ham to win promotion in 1980. Official gate was 48K I think?

Aye good memory as official was 47,129. Back in the days of just 1 sub anarl as West Ham went down to 10 men.

Though as you will know, at Roker the official attendance and actual attendance didn't quite match as loads got in for nowt one way or another (did gatemen skim in football back then?) Nowt like today where the actual is lower than the official 🤣

We'd get 60,000 no bother if there was no Amazon sticks or pubs with dodgy channels.🤣
We'd get them anyway if we were top half, more so if we were pushing for the Europe places, even the Mickey Mouse version.

Surely you dont mean the gatemen getting two through on one click😉

thinking about the sheepfolds development and how thats going to start in earnest for housing, any possible extension / upgrade (or whatever anybody thinks should or shouldnt be built onto the stadium) - It would likely make sense to build it on the south end first to work in conjuction with whats getting built opposite so theres less disruption further down the line closest to the new community thats going to be living there

I love the enthusiasm and the want to expand but for me this is a consolidation season at best then see where we go with an expansion - do people remember the FA Cup game where about 15K turned up - and fair play to everyone that did there were 3 of us on the free bus from life of riley. I think people are excited and getting ahead of themselves which is nice but not how to make business decisions which should be return on investment and at this point there are two many unknowns for that calculation. Jesus I sound like the worlds most boring man....
