Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

Don't think so but metro lines are getting extended to 4 tracks which should massively expand metro coverage around the city. This country is a mess politically atm but it's by far the best council we've had in my lifetime. Investing in culture over dying retail is a brilliant idea.

The Council under Miller and Rowntree did all the spadework - the current lot are reaping what others have sown!

If i had to guess bradley lowery would have ended up winning if they did it via pure numbers then public vote and sorry to say that wouldn't be appropriate for me
Yep they have editorialised it again ,,just produce a list of the suggestions and the numbers for each and be strong enough to defend your choice ! I think you are probably right the bradley lowery would be the most popular choice and whilst it would be personally not my choice i do like democracy in action but as i think of it the Bradley lowery Keel bridge does have a ring to it !

I wont comment since it can never come across well but i will just say i think this somewhat supports the councils strategy

im reading betwean the lines here (as we dont have the info available)are you saying the council made a conscious choice to bar the bradley lowery name suggestion fro the vote and are not publishing the suggestions because it was clearly the most popular choice amongst their electorate ?

As a dictum i aspire to keep that if i feel something wont come across well i go back to first principles an re evaluate my premise's.

Bradley was a lovely brave lad who is clearly linked to safc and has raised lots of for charity i see no reason why they couldnt put his name forward for the vote(if it was a popular suggestion) and whilst personally i would not have voted for it .it is a perfectly valid name and as i said the Bradley lowery Keel bridge does have a ring to it!

Think you will it was. Tyne bridge was finished before Sydney bridge because it was smaller and had less lanes. The design was by Cleveland bridge.
I wasn’t looking at Sydney Harbour Bridge mate was just saying Tyne Bridge was before Wearmouth.

The dates are :-
Tyne Bridge started construction in 1925 mate completed 1928
Wearmouth Bridge started construction 1927
completed 1929.

Amendment to my last reply it was dormant long Ydney bridge was started in 1923 took nine years because of its size. Sydney harbour is somewhat wider than the Tyne.

Original Wearmouth Bridge without the arch was built in 1796.

Might have done but possibly because we were the first(?) to declare for BREXIT but we only just scraped into the top 100 of most BREXIT voting areas in the country
Hell of a coincidence it all ramped up after that and gove was apparently involved alot behind the scenes at one time. Im not sure how much power the likes of miller have to make such a dramatic impact that we have seen over recent years

His mam did an amazing job to raise his case but no i dont think a main bridge for the city over the next 100 years should be named after one individual

The first Wearmouth Bridge which was opened in 1796 was designed by Tom Paine who was the author of "The Rights of Man" and "Common Sense". The bridge was the second iron built bridge in the country the first being "Iron Bridge" which still survives today. Paine himself was active participant in both The American War of Independence and The French Revolution.

While in France he was made a French citizen and elected to the revolutionary National Convention and participated in the Government of France. He was highly critical of Robespierre and the Committee of Public Safety's "Reign of Terror" . This was a very brave stand to take but it led to Paine being arrested and condemned to death by guillotine.

During the Terror the usual practice was to mark the outside of the prisoner's cell door with a chalk cross on the evening before their execution so that the jailers would know who to bring out the next day. On the morning of his proposed execution Paine's door had been marked in such a way but as he had official visitors and cell door (which opened outwards) was wide open it meant that the cross on it was facing the wall. The jailers therefore failed to see the mark and did not take Paine out for execution.

Even luckier within a few days Robespierre himself was overthrown and guillotined within a matter of hours of being arrested. He was a very very dangerous man who had spared absolutely no one so speed was of the essence when the opportunity arose to dispatch him. As a result the "Terror" came to an end and like a number of other political prisoners Paine was released a few months later.

Paine was quite a remarkable man to find time to design a bridge while involved with all of that.
