Forthcoming gigs.

I'm not there loads but they're never really well attended yet good gigs I seem to pick . I get tickets then keep an interest prior .
Jane weaver ,Benefits ,McLusky to name 3 off my head .
I don't think I'm alone in saying I want to be in a full room and not feel crap for the band because I've been there myself .
I sort of stopped looking there for shows and went elsewhere for a while
I'm not laying all the blame at your door but we've got to flog it to death these days to stand any chance .
Yep, all decent turnouts and all had money spent on them for promotion - beyond posters and posting on the grid/Facebook. Targeted ads etc across socials. Jayne Weaver in particular had £100s spent on promotion. Each one of those gigs broke even which believe it or not is a success by today's standards. .

The fact of the matter is that the landscape for grassroots music venues is an incredibly difficult on to operate in - money is tight and audiences have diminished in smaller towns/cities. Which is why you're seeing more and more nostalgia/covers bands popping up and playing venues like ours or even the Cluny and The Fire Station. Unfortunately people want something they can bank on - heritage, local, nostalgia - and seem to be far less likely to drop a tenner on an unknown. We've even started to do free gigs and try to pay the bands with bar takings which has had some success. It's somewhat depressing but that's where we're at and there are venues up and down the country who will tell the same story.

It's great that you're engaged and buying tickets - it's massively appreciated.
It would be handy if you pinned a post to the top of your Twitter page that lists forthcoming events. I know it sold out but I, and at least one other on here didn't know Shonen Knife played recently. I found out by chance a day or two beforehand.
As you say, the gig sold out so the promotion must have been half decent. As it happens though we were not the promoters for that one - just the venue.

I take on board what you're saying re: listings though.

Be good if you could stick around on here, particularly this thread. There’s a decent core of people attend gigs at Pop Recs so having you around will only help things.

Should be a Pop Recs thread like there is for The Fire Station. Original music deserves more focus.
Couldn’t agree more
I sick of struggling to find out what’s coming on
You sign up to venues newsletters and nothing ever comes through or on their website
1719 Sunderland
Nothing on website but theirs a Spanish guitar concert on in July
I’m signed up to their newsletter
Common room primitives in August
Nothing on website
Signed up to their newsletter
Pop recs the same
You find out by chance there’s too many info channels and often depends on what ticket platform is being used

I work at Pop Recs. Not every gig that happens there is promoted by us so it can sometimes be difficult to know stage times ahead of time but we do what we can, often posting on stories when we know. The bands/promoters quite often don't push this either.

The café is a huge part of what we do, also.

The drop off in attendance for this gig compared to others may have had something to do with them putting a Newcastle gig on sale a few weeks before last night's gig.
Was it a sell out, lovely eggs i mean?

I hope I don't come across too critical asi go to pop recs alot, i think i speak for us on this thread saying we're trying to give constructive criticism because we love it, not being to be arsey.

I agree with others that it would be great to have somewhere that actually lists all upcoming gigs, especially as due to different promoters and so on even ticket sales seem to be split across a host of different sites so depending on where i search your fixture list looks entirely different, often with only 2-3 shows in the coming year. The only reliable source ive found is posters inside the venue, at least if they were posted and stickied on facebook or whatever that would be a start
I'm just getting acquainted again after a decade or so sabbatical 😂

Will drop in for sure!
Glory supporting bandwagoner

There's usually a cut off point for online sales. Would need to be if they're printing out lists for the door.
Going to see The Fire Doors (Doors tribute) at Washington Arts Centre in September.

Think there's lads from Field Music and The Futureheads in the band.
They're also playing Pop Recs in December.

Get the alerts sets lads & lasses.

Interesting comments about the Lovely Eggs gig, it was really uncomfortable viewing and i felt really sorry for the guy. Even more so after reading this thread.

She has mentioned the issue on twitter last year, so i was already feeling a bit self conscious about my usual gig stance of standing just slightly bobbing my head, even though im usually half way back. This was a bit much though, especially when she went back for him after another song.

They attract the older age group, not all of whom are interested in jumping about but maybe prefer to be closer to the front.
