Jordan Henderson (signed for Brentford)

I said I was out but I can't resist replying 🤣 Haway man, he sold his morals to be used a sportswashing puppet for Saudi saying and doing stuff like this. Given the money he was on (until 2025 anyway) and the money he could have got elsewhere, did he really need even more millions to be used in this way?

“So do I go somewhere to try something new, to grow the game that I love in another country, and grow the league into one of the best in the world?”

That's what some still don't agree with even now and it was clearly evident in 2023. Now that a rumour of him coming back that opinion seems to have swayed greatly. I posted 4 Henderson thread links and this is just how many likes certain comments got about Jordan coming here late 2024/early 2025 compared to those who would.

Could he have said no to being the Saudi glove puppet or was he too poor at the time?

Don't get me wrong as I'm just playing devil's advocate as I'd have him back even though I'm not keen on what he did. Though I wouldn't go to the lengths some are trying to deflect the criticism that flew about at the time and still is now and try to compare it to Joe Public to justify the reason of him going there in the 1st place and the reasons why he left.
Saudi Arabia is changing. It is probably the most progressive of the middle eastern Islamic regimes. Women can now drive and the permitted age for girls to marry is now 16. It is still illegal to be LGBTI in Saudi but it is not now considered a criminal offence. It doesn’t sound progressive but it is light years ahead of the hardline Islamic regimes like Iran, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen , etc

Let’s all hope for further change in Saudi!

Hendo is perfectly at liberty to go there and play for a private club, and any influence Hendo would have in his local community would be positive - he is a top guy!

I wouldn't call that big progress, and I think child marriage still goes on.

It certainly does but apparently to a lesser extent in Saudi. My point is these are the issues people need to protest against - not Hendo, a footballer. I guess that takes us back to my definition of woke and virtue signalling!

This is partly my argument. Why should he say no to millions? A guy who has made several million from selling property in the U.K. for instance is offered a job in Dubai doing the same thing. Should he say no to that as he’s already become a millionaire? Of course not nobody bats an eyelid.

I know what you're saying but I quoted you about your 2nd point. Does he also have no choice of saying no to the Saudi promotion if he's got millions but wants millions more? Some would still say no when they're making millions and they won't have said or done things in that past that would bring criticism nor will they promote it.

It's not on the same scale but it's similar to when Beckham was called out for it, as have others when they're being used as gloves puppets as were the others promoting golf/boxing etc. Joe Public doesn't do that stuff and even so, it's not as if all multi millionaires would go over as not all players would look the other way to take the money.

If Henderson hadn't said owt prior and said nowt that promoted Saudi then nowt much would be said. That's what the issue was at the time given all that was said such as him wanting to grow their league and world cup video. Yet now there's an actual sniff of him coming back all that's out the window for some and anyone bringing it up is shot down as everyone is now supposed to change their opinion from just a short while ago or they're not a SAFC fan.

I don't disagree with the last sentence. Of course they would look up to him.

In my opinion he is not a good role model for any youngster, football players included.
You've obviously made your mind up about Henderson not being a good role model but is forgiveness not a virtue? Personally I think Henderson has been used as a scapegoat by the Mag apologists in the media to divert attention from their Saudi connection. It hasn't worked and as far as role models go as a footballer he'd take some beating. Keep politics out of football.

Not going to tell anyone what to think mate just think myself there simply no comparison between the two. I was disappointed he chose to go there but was happy that he saw sense. It would’ve been so easy for him to have sat out there for a few years and milked it for the silly money the likes of Ronaldo gerrard to ey etc etc have taken. He didn’t like it made the decision to walk away from it all and tried his look at another huge European football club. I really believe he didn’t want to go to another English side other than us after he left Liverpool. We were not in a position to offer him anything at the time. But like I said if you want to compare a state owned run football club with fans wearing towels and chanting Saudis boys are in town etc to fans welcoming home one of our own after he rectified his mistake very quickly then that’s up to you.

Just what I read at the time, something about you need to be over there for a certain period for the perks to kick in. I heard it last week on sky sports news that players need to be over for a period of time before things kick in. Could’ve been bollocks but I’m sure it was reported at the time he pretty much walked away with nothing from his spell.

Just found it mate he deferred all wages for six months for a tax loophole hole then left afterwards deferring all owed wages costing himself £4m so he basically left with nowt.

Fair play then but that's what the Saudis do. Give them half up front to get them over there

Your losing the plot just as much as the birtley poster here mind. Your double standards are also shining through.

In one breath none of us know that Hendo was actually sorry and we can’t make that assumption. But it’s all good you’re making the assumption that he just got sick over there, and that’s why he quit. Sorry but you can’t make one assumption if another is not allowed.

Your comparison to the mags is tiresome at best, and downright annoying at worst. A human being playing for a team in Saudi, is not the same as being owned by the Saudi state. It’s two completely different things.

A player made a mistake, he got crucified, he lost respect, he lost money, he lost his England place etc. a single man made a mistake, moved on, paid for that mistake, and in your opinion should pay for that mistake for the rest of his life. Otherwise you’ll “walk away” and anyway willing to accept that people make mistakes is a hypocrite.

Newcastle united are actively supporting and wearing Saudi colours, flags and clapping and cheering for a murderous regime. There’s no walking away from it, there’s no making a mistake, it’s quite literally ongoing and they are openly supporting it to the hilt.

That’s what this whole thing boils down to, an obsession to not be seen as mag like, it’s ridiculous, before the Saudis it was attendances, amongst other things. A player making a mistake and walking away is not the same as an entire city and fan base actively supporting a Saudi regime 🙄
Nailed it. Wouldn't be surprised if Kent Mackem is a Mag, deflecting and trolling about a storm in a tea cup.

If he had been up front and said he doesn’t give a shite about playing in the best teams, against the best teams, and he’s only interested in making as much money as possible I’d have a lot more respect for him.

Instead he made a thing for supporting women’s rights and LGBT rights. He was quite rightly applauded for this support of often persecuted groups.

Then, a nah of money is dangled in front of him. Already a multi/millionaire (so his kids weren’t hungry) he turned his back on everything he’d said and went for the lonely.

He then realised it was pretty crap out there and didn’t like it so he changed his mind, went to Ajax and picked up even more money on signing.

That does not make him a good role model. He would presumably get the captain’s armband if he joined. I’d far rather have Luke O’Nien (for example) as a role model for my children than Henderson, for reasons I’ve just written above.

I’m genuinely puzzled about why you can’t understand this. If you also lack morals and ethics you can of course disagree and say there was nothing wrong with his behaviour, but you don’t appear to understand the point.

I have never even suggested that I control Henderson’s life. What an idiotic thing to write.

I am entitled to post on a message board with my opinion, backed up with evidence.

I am also entitled to dislike any notion of Henderson re-signing. It would put me off following Sunderland to be honest if he did. I really don’t want hypocrites and players with no ethics as captain of the club I support.
Just catching up on the thread - you really don't think he's a role model? You will never find a player better spoke of than the lad - your holier than thou act is pathetic

The Magedia planting stories condemning Henderson to draw attention away from the Mags is a new one on me

Makes perfect sense. Eyes opened
