Jordan Henderson (signed for Brentford)

I am also entitled to dislike any notion of Henderson re-signing. It would put me off following Sunderland to be honest if he did. I really don’t want hypocrites and players with no ethics as captain of the club I support.

Dan Neil talked at length in October about the prospect of Henderson returning and his exact words were that he would be a perfect role model for the young lads. Talks about how he has met him for a coffee a couple of times and Jordan gave him loads of advice. The young lads in our squad would definitely look up to him.

I have some sympathy for those that say if it was an every day Joe Public, who wasn't rich, then the offer of such wealth could be hard to turn down. But as has been pointed out, captains of Liverpool who have played in the team for a long time tend not to be boracic. He could have retired early without even noticing, but he dropped his morals n a heartbeat and took the money. That makes him a hypocrite.

You are not grasping the basics - he is playing for a private club in Saudi - not the government. Do you condemn Isador for playing for a private club in Russia? Please answer - as I’ve seen no condemnation from you.

I’m searching here - is your issue about treatment of the LGBTI community?? So are you against regimes that suppress women, hang members of the LGBTI community? Is that your real issue? If so do you condemn Islamic regimes like Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan etc who carry out horrific atrocities or just Hendo who plays football???

In my opinion he is not a good role model for any youngster, football players included.

Sorry but no I wouldn’t as I don’t care. They are footballers not my family. Firstly if a player wants to earn as much money as possible then fair play to them, in no other career do people get scrutinised for this, I work in non-league football and it’s the same just a much smaller scale.

Secondly Henderson was asked due to his position within football. Why would he say no to what he perceived to be a good cause, saying no would have been worse for him.

I'll try one more time, although I suspect it is pointless.

Of course I condemn the actions of those other countries.

However, the difference is that there is a suggestion that Henderson returns to Sunderland. Because of his experience and leadership qualities he would obviously immediately be made captain.

He is a hypocrite and turned his back on important ethical stands that he himself made and he himself said were important to him.

I do not feel such characters are good role models for children. You may do so, that's entirely up to you. I don't.

As such I am not in favour of him returning. Nothing to do with his talent, fitness, experience, leadership .... just that I do not think he is a good role model to be made captain.

Henderson was already set up for life. He didn't need to drop his admirable ethical stance. That s my point.

And yes, no doubt you will. If I do stop my 40 year stretch of closely following and supporting Sunderland that will be for me, not for you.

You don’t answer the question - what is wrong with playing for a private club in Saudi? Do you apply the same protests to people who have worked in Russia, China, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Hungary, Slovakia, Yemen, UAE, India, South Africa etc ?

My biggest issue with this and I keep saying it is that Jordan didn’t go out of his way to become a poster boy or spokesperson for the rainbow laces/one love campaigns. He was asked due to who he is as a person as well as captaincy of Liverpool and England. He was asked to say words (backed by the FA) he wasn’t going to turn around and say no why would he?

To call him a hypocrite is just a bit unfair in my opinion and you shouldn’t be judging his character based on this. If you do though that’s totally your prerogative.
