Jordan Henderson (signed for Brentford)

You don’t think it’s a head decision to bring in someone who has won everything, has top level experience and is still playing at the highest level?
No. I think it’s more of an emotional one. If he wasn’t a Sunderland lad we’d be picking faults in signing a player who will be 35 when the PL season starts

Still a hard no from me. And it’s nowt to do with Saudi. He’s had his time at the club and we should be making the decision with the head and not the heart.
You don’t think he’d offer something mate?. Even take away the Sunderland link I’d think he’d offer experience and be good for the young lads. I doubt we expect him to play every game but he would bring something we are severely lacking in which is experience.

Henderson would have no interest in joining Sunderland if we weren’t premier league
I think, and I know his dad btw, you’re v v wrong here mind m8, it’s not about him being interested it’s about him not wanting to smash our wage structure. Now in the pl that’ll definitely not be the case.

Tuchel recently said Henderson is pivotal in keeping standards high in the camp. If that's the case for England lord knows he would be a massive help with a ridiculously inexperienced squad. I was annoyed with him going to Saudi too, but he's not there anymore and we have an opportunity to improve the overall squad.

Yes from me.

Yes, but the fact that he's a MLF is what might give us a chance of signing him affordably, when other EPL teams would want to do the same, but won't get a look in. Added to that, I can imagine him running through brick walls for us.

The club, and in particular, Speakman and Regis Le Bris aren't mugs so will also have the same reservations about his age and any wage demands. I trust them to assess this rationally.

Aye he’d give us experience but I think his age will show, especially in the position he plays. I think he’d probably come in as our highest paid player and let’s be realistic it’s going to be a massive struggle to stay up, is he going to make that much a difference than say signing a 27/28 year old with the legs to play every game

He's a multi, multi, multi millionaire marra.

He doesn't have to smash the wage structure. He doesn't need the money.

If he wants it that badly, he'd not be pushing for big money, and threatening the wage structure.

He's at the fag end of his career. Nowt on the horizon for him.

I think this is where the link comes in handy, he won’t come in for free but I don’t think he’d won’t the world in wages either. Maybe as a player with a coaching role as well. I’ve not watched him in the league but he’s still managing to play a fair few games for the biggest club in Holland, still get England squad call ups which I think is mad but hey ho. So coaches at a very high level still trust him. He will have younger players around him that will do a lot of the running I just think his experience of managing games, his passing ability etc are worth a gamble that he can still do it for a season.

What we absolutely need to have next season are players who will look after the ball.

If you look at Soton, Ipswich and Leicester and the three the season below (most notably Luton) the number of goals conceded directly from losing possession or a poor touch in their box is frightening.

Southampton playing out from the back despite lacking the technical players to do so was insanity.

You have to have:
An almost perfect first touch now and have the football brain / awareness of what’s going on around you. Take a heavy touch near your box or misplace a pass in your own final third ( see jack Clarke vs Man City) and you might as well be taking a shot at your own keeper.

Which is why players like Le Fee, and hopefully Henderson will be invaluable. Not as ball winners, more ball retainers.
100%....Keep the ball a bit, dont invite uneccessary pressure.

The coaching thing would be good. I mean if there was a path for him (if he’s good enough) to go on and become an assistant, aye. I know a couple of gooners who say Jorginho was doing something like that at Arsenal, learning like that and coaching from the sidelines as he knew the game. They reckon he’ll be a manager at some point. Funny he plays in the same position as Henderson

Henderson was obviously a much better player when they were at their respective peaks but the same argument was made for M'Vila regarding the fact that he had recently been playing European football. The flaw with that argument is that they were both playing for big-name clubs where the overall quality of their domestic leagues is very poor

Sorry like but he was out in Greece, Henderson playing for Ajax and champions league next year and in the England squad

He’s literally a champions league winning captain it’s chalk and cheese

Mvilla was an ok player who had 1 decent season for us

Don’t agree

Teams who try to do that go straight back down

We have to be pragmatic and hit teams on the break

Yeah I know

Think, with respect, you’re missing the point, we couldn’t afford his left foot in the championship with our wage structure, and despite what we think, why would anybody, (you and me included) work for anything less than what we’re worth in any industry, no matter how comfortable we are. Now in the premier we can probably afford both feet and his head, so if it’s right for him and us, nothing stopping us.

Again you are (perhaps deliberately) missing the point.

None of the above examples will be role models for our youngsters.

You can only make your own decisions, not those of others.
I agree but my point stands, I get that it genuinely jarred prior to mags getting bought for some people….. however majority would not have given a flying flock that JH had been playing in Saudi. Do you not agree?

Not comparing them in terms of prime for prime as it's obvious to anyone with even a basic clue about football as to who has been the better player, just feels like a classic case of people on here wanting an ex-player back for the sake of it IMO. The European football aspect is a flawed argument to me because of the poor standard of the Eredivise and the fact that Ivan Toney is also in the England squad despite being in the Saudi league suggests that not everyone is getting in entirely on merit.

If he's still anything close to the player he was at his peak he'd be a brilliant signing for us, I'm just not at all convinced that he is and we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

Errrr because we wouldn’t need the money? Bill Gates is working pro bono and is giving away his money.

Yes, I agree the majority don’t care.
