Matt Young - Thoughts from a Salford Fan

Have to be honest, with watching lower league football as regularly as I do then I’d say the level of the SPL, outside Rangers and Celtic, is very similar to League Two.
In that sense I’d see very little reason to loan Matt to a level similar to one he has already excelled in.
Tends to be a lot of players movement between the clubs in League Two and the SPL, which again suggests the levels are pretty much the same.

Sorry, can't agree at all. The best players in the SPL are miles better than league two.

The other point is that Young would be playing against Rangers and Celtic which is a far higher standard to anything outside of the Championship.

I’m more than happy to write another article on my blog about Matt as a few of the points raised I can definitely address.
If anyone has any other specifics they’d like me to refer to please just post a reply here and I’ll do my best to get in the piece.

It sounds as though a big strength is his distribution. What's he like under pressure in the box when defending set pieces, is he commanding? It's harder for a younger lad when they're up against physical, experienced players who've been around the block.

Has he saved any penalties?

He's 6'3" and he has the physique of a man.

Darlo fans were praising him for all aspects of his game playing in men's football at 16/17.

He definitely saved a penna or 2 for Salford, I read it on here!

EDIT: He saved 3 out of 5 last season.

Class, so he's even a penalty saving specialist

I just think sometimes lads that age can be tall but not have that adult strength yet, or they don't have the confidence/aggression to use it.

I see it in jiu jitsu all the time, big lads, but still fragile. After a few years they're like a different prospect.

Everyone who's watched him seems to say he's very calm, mature far beyond his years.

The only penalties he let in were against Man City, Doku and Grealish.

When you seem to have a brilliant player on your books and you need all the money you can get to strengthen the team I wouldn't spend anything on a keeper just yet.

Give the kid a chance pre-season at what will be mainly a higher standard than league 2. If he looks the part give him the No. 2 spot at least.

I don’t think we want him on the bench all season. We want him playing regularly - maybe with a bring back clause if anything happens to Hendo, if possible.

If he does better than Patto pre-season he can have the number 1 spot for me. Lots of fans at Darlo reckon he was better than Pickford when they were both 17. You can't get much of a better recommendation.

I’m hearing good reports and one day it sounds like he’d be our number 1. But he is still very inexperienced and asking him to play at Old Trafford, Villa Park, SJP is a big ask.

Also - Patto is a top and young keeper. He will continue to improve and could be a future England number 1!

Would be ideal if Hibs needed a keeper. Their rule no1 should be: a Sunderland loanee plays every minute.

TBF Old Trafford likely to be one of the quieter afternoons for a keeper these days, amusingly.

I talk about him with some goalkeeping clips and the other young keepers at Sunderland at the end of the Wolves Review vid with Connor Bradley that I put out today.
This is marked to start at that spot.

Cracking video from you both . Always a good watch and you could be the best duo from the North East since Ant and Dec the way you have started.

Hes at the same level as pickford was in the same season agewise. He was also playing with the first team at 15/16.

I think young may surprise you.

I saw him play three or four games for Darlington aged 17 and he’s absolutely incredible.

As the Salford fan pointed out it’s his physical presence, awareness, composure and decision making. His quick and effective distribution was also impressive. It was quite unbelievable that this was just a kid. I think I posted on here after seeing him for the first time that he’ll play at the highest level.
