Matt Young - Thoughts from a Salford Fan

Crazy as it sounds I would seriously give him an opportunity to become out number 1 next season. He's 6'3", with a man's physique and is obviously massively talented. He's playing for England under 20's at 18!

I would let him and Patto battle it out pre-season to see who impresses the most.

Shay Given joined us when he was 19. Young is 19 in November.

If you're good enough you're old enough. It would save us money to spend elsewhere too.
No chance we should be risking Young in the premier league next season. Given was a few month short of 20 , the equivalent for Young would be starting not next season but the season after and it was also a division below. That’s before we get to the fact Given is one of the premier leagues best ever keepers. Far too risky a chance to take with a keeper.

Just wanted to say a massive thanks for providing the link to my blog as it’s really satisfying to see how many views the Matt Young article has got since this thread was created.

I feel like I’ve become a bit of an expert on Matt in the last 9 months or so and I’ve really enjoyed being interviewed by A Love Supreme and the Roker Report for articles about how he’s done in his loan spell at Salford City.

Always happy to discuss my thoughts on players and hope there are some more Sunderland youngsters we can loan in future who are even half as good as Matt was for us in this campaign.

SPL feels like the perfect level. Championship might be a bit too far, League One maybe not quite enough. SPL has a bit of variety, League one standard teams but also Rangers, Celtic and a few Championship standard teams.

Being a keeper in league 2 is just as hard as being a keeper in the premier league

When you think of the aerial bombardment you get every time there’s a throw in or a corner

I’m happy enough with Patto number 1 and young as back up next season

* I’ve never played in nets so the above could be bollocks

:lol::lol::lol: no it isn't, the balls aren't hit as hard or as accurately.

One thing I didn’t realise until recently was that Jordan Pickford had 6 loan different spells out on loan before making his first team debut for Sunderland.
This season at Salford was only Matt’s second loan move.
The reason I mention Pickford is that I’ve heard so many times from various sources that Young is the next on the Sunderland conveyor belt that produced Pickford.

I can only speak about what I’ve seen from Matt, but before even talking about his goalkeeping related talent of shot stopping and distribution I think highlighting his incredibly composure and calmness is definitely worth starting with.

There have been some, what I would call lazy narratives around Matt being dropped for a period two games after the heavy defeat against Man City in the FA Cup. Some fans said he was taken out of the firing line for his own good as being a young goalkeeper, conceding eight in a game could deeply affect his confidence. Personally, I saw no evidence that his performance levels dropped in the two games he played after that, but our head coach, Karl Robinson, saw it differently.

Young is a player who always makes his team mates, and the fans in the stands relaxed when he’s in the pitch. His unflappable nature is real, it’s not an act. And the part I struggled to get my head around is that he is able to do this as an eighteen year old. It’s just not normal to see at this age, but I feel it definitely speaks to how far he can progress, as confidence, talent and hard work will get him as far as he wants to go in the game.

Great post thank you

I have sort of followed Salford’s season because of this loan. They narrowly missed out on the playoffs and always seemed to do better when young was playing. Interested to know where you thought you would have finished if he had played the whole season.

Thanks for that mate. Did you write the article by any chance?

Welcome to the board. What are your thoughts on Salford at the moment? High expectations for next season?

Thanks for writing it - I know he's highly thought of at SAFC and it's nice to hear from people who have watched him week in week out.

Have to be honest, with watching lower league football as regularly as I do then I’d say the level of the SPL, outside Rangers and Celtic, is very similar to League Two.
In that sense I’d see very little reason to loan Matt to a level similar to one he has already excelled in.
Tends to be a lot of players movement between the clubs in League Two and the SPL, which again suggests the levels are pretty much the same.

Yes, that’s my article.
My blog is a recent addition to the content I produce about Salford City.
I also host the One Up Front Salford City podcast on Spotify as well as being the editor of, and regular writer for, the Old Dead Tree fanzine.

Matt’s had plenty of coverage on both of those other platforms as it’s Ben impossible to ignore his progress this season.

That's great mate, loved the article. How did you end up coming across this site and realising it had been posted on here?

Looking at the PPG and goals against, on the surface level it seems crazy Young didn't play more. @dannyboy any insights? I know it's not as simple as that, but it does look like play offs could have been reached

PPG:

Young: 2
Jones: 1.1

Goals against per 90:

Young: 0.9
Moore: 1.38

Heck, they even score more per 90 with Young on the pitch!

The short answer is that the surge in the views of my blog showed the biggest referring website was here. Also knew about the site due to knowing about the ALS fanzine when they interviewed me about Matt earlier this year.

I thought it might have something to do with you checking an SEO tool

Give us a laugh then, how many views did it get?

What do you think of Karl Robinson, he was universally disliked by Sunderland fans when we come up against him in league one when he was managing Oxford.

I’m more than happy to write another article on my blog about Matt as a few of the points raised I can definitely address.
If anyone has any other specifics they’d like me to refer to please just post a reply here and I’ll do my best to get in the piece.
