Jordan Henderson (signed for Brentford)

Of course his best days are behind him but that doesn't alter the fact he's everything we need going into a PL campaign. Quality, experienced and a leader. I think we have to add genuine PL experience somewhere into the squad and a bloke who is still getting into the England squad fits the bill.

Fair enough but it still smacks to me of sentiment rather than what he would actually bring onto the field.

The big difference with hendo to the others you mention is he actually cares about the club and will be doing everything he can possibly do to keep us up. I'd even suggest he would play for a lot less than people on he think he'd want. We can't stay up playing young inexperience lads we need at least 2-3 players who have 5-10 years playing top level football, hendo is one of them and I'd say a low risk option.

Again, fair points but what we actually need is players who can compete at PL level whatever their levels of experience. People made these same points about needing experience in the Championship and we proved them wrong. Of course I’m not advocating sticking with 100% youngsters but what I want to see is players who are going to have their best years with us. My only point is that Hendo, to me, feels like exactly the sort of player we used to sign in the bad old days in respect of what he would bring to our midfield.

I'm all for this so long as it's a good deal financially, which will basically mean Henderson taking a lot less than he could get elsewhere, which he may well be prepared to do for sentimentality reasons.

Willing to accept this could well describe me like. I do think it would be a poor signing but would be desperate to be proved wrong.
I can't think of a single reason myself. I don't think he would require big wages. He's a current England international, never had any major injuries, is a captain and a leader.

Feel free to tell me the reasons why he would be a poor signing?

Just repeating myself - I want players who are going to have their best days with us, not those whose best days are behind them.

I wonder if the SMB would think his experience was what we needed if he's 2 yards short of pace and the midfield keeps getting overrun.
Within 2-3 games all the love on this thread would be replaced with the usual 'not good enough at this level' chatter.
More chance of our midfield being overrun in the Premier League without Henderson than with imo...and also he will be in the referee's ear which is most definitely something we lack.

Fully agree.

But surely you can see the reason why we need both quality and experience to have any chance of survival in our first season?

This signing would also free up cash that we can use elsewhere.

He could have an average season and we can call it quits. He could be great and we can extend the deal.

Ronaldo is still playing at 40.

This.
I am conflicted because I was VERY annoyed at his hypocrisy when he first moved to Saudi Arabia and take their money.
But he didn’t stay very long, did he? He dropped the dosh and went to Ajax.
Did he feel differently? Did he see the moral error of his decision to to take their money blood money?
…..or did he just buckle under the pressure and tried to whitewash his image?

I think that he would do a great job on the pitch and on the trading field as a mentor to the likes of Rigg and Neil….but I am struggling to forgive him at the moment.
Sorry if people don’t agree, but it is how I feel. 😞
Exactly the same here mate

Thanks for proving my point.

a) he had long retired in 2010
b) he played 23 times for the club in total with two of those as a substitute.

c) when he was out injured for the remainder of the 1999/2000 season Reid still wouldn't bring Helmer in to replace him, but I guess by then he was already out on loan playing Champions League football for Hertha Berlin, typical Sunderland not good enough for us, but good enough for the Champions League
Think we are at crossed wires I thought you were referring to Jordan Henderson not Steve Bould

He's not going to be playing all the games, can wait to see him return
Will be a great signing backed by the vast majority which this board doesn't represent

He’s best days that are behind him are far ahead of anything we can get with there best days ahead of him at the moment

This would be a no brainier for me
