Matt Young - Thoughts from a Salford Fan

I mentioned this on another thread , what Championship club would agree to an 18 year old keeper on loan being their first choice ?
He needs games

Not sure where either club are at for keepers but someone like Cardiff or Plymouth would be ideal , decent crowds , looking to get out of L1

Would prefer to see him in the championship though
We dropped the solid and dependable Alex Chamberlain for a 19 year old Shay Given and won the league!

Am I right in saying it took him a while to get into the team and then he was in and out a bit?

Anyone have any knowledge as to why that was?
The other keeper was mid thirties and club captain. Took a while to shift him, had a fantastic run of games with clean sheets followed by 8-0 at the Etihad in the FA cup. Got taken out again and came back. From the results I saw they were much better with young in goal than the more experienced keeper.

Didn't start in the league until December then played every game until the end of January. Dropped after that until early March where we he played every game to the end of the season. It was about 20 league games total, something along those lines.

I can’t see him being near the first team for another year or two.

He’s got to be playing so it’ll likely be league one next season and if he does well hopefully a championship loan, unless we’re back there then he might be in our championship squad.

It was to do with how many loan players can play at once.
I did read that but towards the end of the season, you play your best team. The goalkeeper selection in the last 30 games wasn’t random according to fitness or performance, it was preselected. Just seems odd.

As mentioned in the article the OP posted Matty was their cup keeper and they got knocked out of the league and pizza cup early.

An article was ran saying we might recall him due to lack of game time (most league 2 teams are only going to play about 3 FA Cup games max). A few days later he started in the league! He had 7 clean sheets in 8 games and was dropped as soon as the transfer window closed!

He eventually made his way back into the side as Salford were struggling for the play offs without him! They missed out by 2 points.

Darlo fans had Pickford and Young on loan at 17. They all seem to rate Young higher.

Makes no difference where he plays as long as he plays

Well ideally he needs a club who plays it out from the back, we won't want him at a club who are hitting the ball long every time as that's not the way we play. As you say, he also needs a club where he's all but guaranteed a start.

Being a keeper in league 2 is just as hard as being a keeper in the premier league

When you think of the aerial bombardment you get every time there’s a throw in or a corner

I’m happy enough with Patto number 1 and young as back up next season

* I’ve never played in nets so the above could be bollocks

People are getting a bit carried away expecting a championship loan I reckon. Which team is going to put their faith in an 18 year old lad with 20 league games behind him.

League 1 or the SPL at his age would still be fantastic for his development.

As already mentioned we took Given at 19 and we won the league. If you're good enough you're old enough.
