Durham v Somerset (h) 23/5/25

Well that was bizarre. Just a mixture of a poor innings yesterday and I have to say some poor bowling last night and today.

I thought Lees was poor with Minto today after that catch.

Some positives from the game.

Batting wise is concerning. It seems "all or nothing" with some at the moment. Gay for example how many times now has he scored 0? McKinney is also struggling. It'll be good to have Wagner with us for the next CC game, we desperately need some experience and it petrifies me if Raine breaks down. We're always gonna have good and bad times with the young bowlers, they just need a bit experience around them and we've only got Ben Raine as a regular.

I don't want to start the discussion over Bas De Leede but I'd have him involved, that's all I'm saying on that one.

Can't win them all.

Not a lot of positives to comment on, lots to be critical about, no value in calling players out, team depleted and we end up with a bowling attack that wouldn’t be scary in the NEPL, is the batters contribution adequate, combination of all of the previous and we end up with results like today.

Fortunately it looks like Yorkshire will lose again and you’d probably fancy Warwickshire to see off Worcestershire. From a week ago being within touching distance of the top to all of a sudden looking over our shoulders again.

From a position of strength Durham’s play disintegrated rapidly and fell apart like a tower of cards
Disheartening for players ,staff and members
Over the years I have expected SAFC to crumble but not DCCc .
Role reversal has happened very quickly this weekend
Not sure where you get that from.....as a person who has only watched Durham CC closely this last 12 months or so, I think there are a number of occassions ( last season and this ) where DCC have thrown away a winning position either by poor batting or poor bowling when it really mattered.
If anything this latest game underlines the fact that despite the obvious talent in the squad, Durham will win nothing unless certain players perform consistantly at their best level. Its no good a player scoring a hundred one match if he is going to bookend that game with single figure innings ( if he scores at all ) in the two games before and after.
The way I see it , Durham are way more frustrating to watch atm than SAFC and that is down imo to deficiencies in mentality and application. I honestly think that having put themselves in a strong position after 1st innings ( and following on from that great win v Notts ) the side thought this game was going the same way but that apparent arrogance only succeeded in them throwing this game away

So we weren't allowed to use Coughlin as the concussion replacement as the match referee said he's an all rounder despite batting at 10 for us in recent times averaging 10. They almost released Potts then he got pulled back at the last minute. We were then told we couldn't use Carse despite him being at the ground (he was stood near me watching the match). That meant we were forced into using an unfit Hogg. What an absolute shambles

To avoid similar shambolic, potentially biased decisions by the match referee, I'd suggest a substitute is named before the match. If you end up replacing a bowler with a batsman, so be it. Or vice versa. Most teams would probably name an all rounder. 'Like for like' is too subjective, as we have witnessed.

I'd imagine Hogg was "free" yesterday because he was not fully fit and the club weren't allowing him to play NEPL as it was Parkinson and De Leede on drinks yesterday. Can't imagine the coaching staff were too happy having to use Hogg and I did notice he came off today and didn't look overly happy. I'd imagine if he was fully fit/near fit then the club would have had him playing NEPL yesterday for his local club team as De Leede and Parkinson were available doing drinks yesterday (Rhodes may have been as well).

It's a strange situation but when we are talking about player safety with concussion, to then be told/forced into fielding an unfit player is somewhat ridiculous

Alternatively it could agreed pre-match which player would replace any particular concussion victim. You might have to keep more players around not playing than you’d like but it would avoid any shite like Saturday.

You're never going to get identical *like for like" substitutes. Yusuf is no mug with the bat and Coughlin is an inferior bowler. As like for like as you can reasonably expect but match referees are in a no win situation on these occasions.

Well that's my run of thread starter over.
Hopefully a month to get one or two more experienced bowlers back. On the up side Minto continues to impress and I thought Killeen looked a better bowler than I realised he was and not just that magic spell. But having a 4 man attack with what ended up with 3 inexperienced rookies and one of them half fit was just to much.

That was an issue but our batting here was piss poor

When you have a young attack you are looking for your batting imports to step up, it was stacked and nobody got a score. Really poor stuff

Hogg got pulled from the Newcastle game mid way through on Saturday, he had batted for Newcastle

Oh. I did wonder cos De Leede and Parkinson were on drinks, I just assumed Hogg was injured. He didn't look comfortable at all especially yesterday when he subbed himself off at one point. What a carry on.

Agree the batting should have been better but you won't win many matches with that attack not the players fault just circumstances with call ups and injuries. But I said before a ball was bowled they should not be playing 6 specialist batsmen and Robinson especially with our best batsmen this season Clark relegated to batting at 7.

Maybe but not gonna win many games gettint bowled out for 130 odd. I accept it was an issue 2nd innings like against a good batting lineup

I honestly believe they fudged the selection issue they got a record score in the last game at the Riverside but dropped a bowler and brought in a batsmen. The problem being Bedingham desperately wants to spend time in the middle before the South Africa test match and this was his last chance and I bet the Durham management didn't want to huff him so they felt obliged to play him. That's fine but the normal casualty who is Clark couldn't really be dropped after back to back hundreds so they took the easy option and dropped a bowler. This is not me being wise after the game I mentioned all this at the start of the thread.

So if we had beaten Somerset, which we could/should have, we'd be on 100 points, on the coat tails of the leaders and arguably as important, 16 points nearer safety. A waste.
