No not at that stage, he was getting better but they still saw him as a spinner

The swan thing that he gets lots of stick for (even though he was literally injured snd couldnt play) was partly as he rated him so much as a bowler

Be could have been a proper all rounder I think, surrey absolutely killed his bowling

Wasn’t he almost not bowling for us at the time because he had a wrist/hand issue? If we are honest he was picked for England because he could bowl spin and happened to be in Australia at the time!

Carson would be the better shout. Coles is very much a batsman who can bowl.

Carson is their main spinner who is a handy lower order batsman. I think Farhan Ahmed and him should be the next ones selectors look at.

They need a backup in case Bashir has another difficult period, after he struggled in 3 series on the bounce now.

Leach isn't the answer for Australia even though he'd be suitable for India if Bashir fails in say the first two tests.

But I think it's quite clear McKinney is being groomed as potential successor to Crawley as opener.

Sure someone said on here ECB stepped in to try and make sure he played more for us last season.

As we had Borthwick opening for a period as a way to shoehorn him into the side.

Just leave F Ahmed to bowl a few years, we pick spinners too young in my opinion then just get rid of them

R Ahmed yeah he needs to become an all rounder to get near the side, he bats like a tail ender when he plays there maybe opening the batting will help

Agree that too but if come the end of the summer he's got 50+ wickets at sub 30 and is the best performing spinner in the country.

Surely you can't ignore him just because he's a kid still.

He had more FC wickets at the end of last season. Than Bashir and Rehan had combined before their England honours.

His wickets included 3 Sri Lankan test players scalps on his FC debut and 10fer against Surrey.

We picked Hartley with only 40 FC wickets from 20 games and Bess on 63 from 17. Farhan has 28 already from 7 and 11 innings.

Now you could argue all of them guys were brought in too soon and it affected them. But when the cupboard is bare we cling to whatever we can.

Do you know anywhere to compile a list of current english bowlers still playin with most first class wickets?

To find out yourself probs need Cricket Archive and you've got to pay for that.

Maybe worth asking on reddit cricket forum, loads of stattos on there that probably can work it out.

For free ones Howstat I find is a better database for having a look than Cricinfo to try and get the answer. Lot of googling to try and nail it down.

Here is the two closest to 1000 FC wickets amongst active players though

980 wickets

So if Harmer had actually committed to England he'd be second on your list after Jimmy.

Did lyon no harm getting picked early, biggest shame for Bashir is that he was so consistent in India and has struggled every other time he's played bowl 6 balls in the same area

Yeah I guess but he’s a pretty just conventional off spinner, I guess what I mean is who has the best repeatable stock ball rather than searching for some like wonder kid

Thing is, he will take a hatful against Zimbabwe, but not really meaning much for what lies ahead. Unsure meself, i know its not the popular view

Rushy had a very similar record, who here thought he should start in an Ashes series in Australia?

Sam Cook looks set to play the Zimbabwe test as England have asked for him to be rested.
Atkinson returns this week and Tongue plays again after missing last week.
Woakes injured with an ankle injury atm.

This might sound stupid, but despite their records, I rate Tongue higher than Atkinson

Not convinced Atkinson can bowl quick on a consistent basis, seems to happen almost by accent

I knew someone would say that it’s not remotely the same, Ben stokes was educated here snd grew up here, he’s English

Worral moved to England in his mid 20s for work, there’s not one bit of him is English, he’s just Australian, no chance, not even got relatives from here
