Jack Clarke

Ipswich must have more options on that left side than anywhere else. Even when Enciso goes back to Brighton there's no guarantee Clarke will be first choice.

Steven Gerard is a terrible example here. What if you are a potential England international but your home club is Barrow or Harrogate Town? Nobody would expect a player to be loyal to those sides and turn down the massive wages. Watson has taken the cash and that's fair enough to be honest. Our model is to develop players and move them on for decent money which we have done here. We would not and could not match the wages that Brighton can offer due to their premier league TV cash.

It just shows how much of a game changer it would be for us to get promoted as this would be a completely different conversation.
KLD will get more out of the deal than Watson and Watson has to work for Brighton for 4 years.

His agent got him a move to a club who were one of the favourites for relegation. That's exactly as it's panned out. It's not easy to shine in a very poor team. He also got a move to a club who play a rigid system alien to Clarke's strengths.

You can argue he got him a big signing on fee and wage increase but footballing wise it was a poor move.
He used to get his haircut by a mate of mine and he was abit wounded when it was only Leeds and Ipswich genuinely in for him

The fact he was happy to let Harte keep blabbing for over a year and burnley kept bidding proved that he was keen to get away whenever he could.

Clarke actually wanted to stay - he just wanted to be paid at what he thought his market value was.

The club finally increased their offer to Clarke and it was accepted but Ipswich had already started to make their move.

I liked Clarke but our development of players in his position is a lot closer in ability than I thought my guess is our academy will produce better wingers in the future….

He was found out against the barcodes. He should have stayed, but he believed the hype and signed for a team that 18 months later are going to potentially be below us

I’m not buying this judging a player on the mags match. As a team, no-one did well. Newcastle were better on the day. But that one match does not define someone’s career.

I’ve watched players like Quinn, Phillips & Henderson all have shit matches. Quinn was booed by Sunderland supporters. They all had great careers.

Clarke couldn’t even get off the bench in Ipswich’s crucial game against wolves yesterday. He’s just not good enough for the PL.

He was actually poor after his injury last season. It’ll be interesting to see if he rips the league up again next year with Ipswich.

Clarke's issue is that he was purchased by a club who employ a system that was never going to suit him.

Now you can rightfully say that's where a good agent/representative should be stepping him and advising, maybe he did for all we know, but it was a silly move in that respect and that's not hindsight taking as it was pointed out at the time too but I was apparently "just bitter".

To me it's both an issue of scatter-gun poor recruitment by Ipswich with no real thoughts on how some of these players are going to fit, but the player/his advisors have to take plenty of accountability and responsibility too.

Harte played this very poorly and ultimately Clarke's only option as a result was a last minute move to a club who's style of play was never going to suit him.

Everyone who says that ignores his performance away at Fulham in the FA Cup the previous year. He was great in that game.

How was he found out against the barcodes ffs 🤦‍♂️

Aye he had a poor game but he was literally the only one of our players that tried to make something happen

At the time of that game he was our only attacking threat and was literally carrying us every week.

Show me any winger that would have done well in that game. They had practically three players on him everytime he got the ball because we had absolutely fuck all else that was going to worry them

Dense some of our fans like

I agree with your principle, but your examples are all solid premier league players who occasionally had off days. Clarke's issue against the mags wasn't really that he played badly, it's that it showed he hasn't got anything like the pace to play that position in the Premier league, which his season so far for Ipswich has underlined.

So what happened when he played extremely well v PL Fulham, and scored in both ties?

Pretty sure Clarke was statistically the quickest player in our team when he was here.

Against the Mags, he was part of a team that were completely outclassed on the day. The fact he’s had not run in the team for Ipswich again makes it very hard to judge. Especially given he’s not playing in his strongest position in a team that are getting pumped every week.

No player shone on that day and it’s hard to stand out when the whole side is being dominated. He was also up against one of the best right backs in England who was right up for it and had a very good game .
I can’t see how a player who was arguably the best in the division , can’t step up and at least compete at the level above .

With Clarke here we’d have gone up this season. But that’s mainly due to the injuries we’ve had to Mundle (and somewhat Watson)
