Had a rare weekday off today due to the dogs booster appointment at the vets. Went for a swim/sauna then bait in the Fire Station (👍) then to the Winter Gardens. The coal exhibition was small but quite moving then up to the shipbuilding floor. Even withstanding local interest and family heritage it's brilliant just for the models of ships. Then some contemplation in the Gardens. Lovely museum. Also good to see a lot of the redevelopment underway/near completion.

I'd love to see a whole museum dedicated to it. Maybe I'm biased because my grandda was a boiler maker but I find it fascinating. No disrespect but if I grew up in Axminster or Yeovil I don't know whether I'd want to go to carpet or glove museum but ships are interesting. The design blueprints, the draughtsmanship, the actual building process and unfortunately the disasters.
Also ships played a huge role in this countries history(and therefore giving our empire world history) what happened to ships after they left the Wear both good and bad? We know about the Liberty ships and the Torrens but did any of Sunderland built ships transport slaves or indentured labour in Mauritius.
It's not a living in the past thing, I think done well it would be a fascinating museum like the People Museum on the Clyde.

There's the Maritime Heritage place down the East End. Bit out of the way but they do restoration and keep the skills alive. They have old tools donated to them by the old boys.

The ship models have always fascinated me.

The one near the Seafarers house and the Holy trinity church? It's it interesting to see the skills but it's more like a workshop. It is good to see the skills being kept alive

Aye. Would be good if they could combine this with a museum in the city centre.

I used to live within a mile of the Railway Musuem in York. Obviously iconic Musuem that I'll never tire of but I think that they could be Maritime version of that. York(and Shildon) have the distinct advantage of being able to display the trains which would be a massive challenge for a ship Musuem but it could be as interesting and immersing.
