Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

There's making outrageous demands and then there's being fair. He is reportedly on 600 quid a week. There are other squad players earning a lot more than him, e.g. Ba 4,500, (according to reports) who will not play anywhere near as much as him over the next 18 months.

On that basis, not signing an extension now isn't outrageous, depending on what he is being offered, nor does it mean he wants to leave Sunderland. He's got 18 months, no rush, it's in his interests to play more football, establish himself as a first team regular and then negotiate his contract.

You don't know 'he wants Brighton that much'. Rather than look for a problem with a young lad, and you have no idea what has happened there, best to leave it in the past. He's still here, according to SAFC and Brighton valuations of a lad who has barely played, you'd have to think he's going to be a very good player for us.

He's not on 600 a week mate. Knock it off. This isn't the 1970s

I hope the club tell him he won’t play unless he signs a contract . Plenty of players here … many better than him who are committing their future
That worked well for us when Reidy did that to Allan Johnstone when he knew he was seeing his contract out to sign for Rangers . I know he isn't a 1st team starter at present when Mundle is back but he has a big part to play for us this season

There's absolutely no reason to think he won't get his head down. He's a professional footballer with his whole career ahead of him. Whatever happened, it's all good for Watson with him being a lad with a bright future. It would be incredible if the lad isn't just looking forward to playing football and showing what he's made of.

Those who are making a big deal of him almost signing for Brighton are putting two and two together and getting shitloads of drama. The lad almost went, it happens, nobody knows what happened except those close to him. You'll probably get someone on here who reckons they know him and know exactly what happened, which is almost certainly bollocks.

'Great opportunity and challenge for the lad now. Can he force his way into the team at the expense of Mundle.
Also great opportunity to lose out on £13 million if what you have said doesn’t happen ie get his head down.

The bigger context here is how Harte leverages wealth for himself, his daughter and thirdly Watson.
If his parents had their heads screwed on they would be saying stick at proving yourself, there is a bigger prize than the first thing that comes along.
Harte was agitating to get Clarke away for so long that he’s made sure watsons contract is ran down.

Agree a contract then.
For about the millionth time. Harte isn’t his agent , nor does he work for the agency Watson is with.

It's a different scenario to Clarke IMO because it's being reported there's a few mid premier league teams interested in him.

If he hits the ground running again when he's fit in a month or so he'll have 2 months to impress before the end of the season.

Hopefully he can help us to promotion and then kick on again with us next season.

If not they'll be a few clubs putting offers in. A bidding war if you like.

Say what you want about Harte but that's his job, get the best deal and move for his client. The only thing I didn't like was when he publicly came out with something on the lines, Clarke needs to move on, which was true but shouldn't have been said. We also can 16th last season so we really can't begrudge Clarke moving to Ipswich

So, I've asked my AI pal what would happen with regards compensation should Tommy leave on a 'free' at the end of his contract having played up to 30 games and with this previous 13million bid on the record. This is what he says:

Several factors will be considered when determining the compensation sum for the young footballer, including:

  • Player's age and experience: The player is 20 years old and has played at least 30 games for the senior team, which suggests a good level of experience for his age.
  • Player's contribution to the club's success: The player's contribution to the Championship club's success will be taken into account. This can be assessed by looking at his appearances, goals, assists, and overall performance.
  • Club's investment in the player's development: The Championship club has invested in the player's development since he was 10 years old. This investment will be recognized and factored into the compensation sum.
  • Previous transfer offers: The previous £13 million bid from the Premier League club suggests that the player is highly valued. This will be a significant factor in determining the compensation sum.
  • Current market value of similar players: The current market value of similar players will also be considered. This can be assessed by looking at recent transfer fees for players of similar age, experience, and ability.
Based on these factors, the compensation sum is likely to be significant. It could be in the region of several million pounds, potentially exceeding the previous £13 million bid. However, the final amount will be determined by a tribunal, which will take all the relevant factors into account.

It is important to note that this is just an estimate, and the actual compensation sum could be higher or lower. The final decision will rest with the tribunal, which will carefully consider all the evidence presented.

If he can't be professional about it (your point about what he said re. Clarke refers) then the club should refuse to deal with him.

Her right. Once he's back he has to prove playing wise
in the next four and a bit months he ....A . Deserves a new contract or B. He gets his move over the £13m already bid.

I admit iam guessing but there feels like an indecent haste to get Watson away and I wonder if he regretted not pushing it sooner with Clarke

This a typical RTG argument relying on something that has happened. Wait and see. There's no reason whatsoever to think that a professional footballer with a bright future is going to 'not get his head down'.

You're not making any sense, mate, just dribbling all over the thread.

Barking up the wrong tree. Watson has his own agent to make a few quid out of a move.

It's debatable. A few of us could see that the top flight probably wasn't for Clarke. Would be better off in the second division as one of the best players in the league.

WATSON HAPPY TO STAY

Kristjaan Speakman has rubbished claims that Tommy Watson “wanted to leave” Sunderland on deadline day. Let’s face it the lad is a massive Sunderland fan and his family watch him every week, why would he want to go to Brighton?

DIDN’T WANT TO LEAVE
“I think it would be really unfair to suggest that the player wanted to leave. Tommy is like a number of young players that we’ve got, where they’re on the up, they’re highly-rated and ambitious, which we want them to be, and then they get presented with an opportunity. Ultimately, Tommy didn’t have a decision to make because there wasn’t an agreement between the clubs. If the clubs had agreed, he would have had a decision to make, and you could understand why he would choose to stay, but you could also understand why he might decide to leave. That would be based on his views. But we never got to that point, so it was never really an issue. I think Tommy is such a level-headed kid that it’s absolutely not a problem. He’s Sunderland through and through, but he’s also ambitious and wants to get promoted and play in the Premier League with Sunderland. I’ve spoken to him this morning and he’s the usual Tommy Watson – he wants to get back fit and wants to get back to the Stadium of Light, scoring goals.”

CONTRACT
“I don’t think it was a risk. Tommy’s got a year left on his contract. At the minute, he’s fully committed to what we’re doing, and there’ll obviously be ongoing conversations about whether he can extend that or whether there’s going to be a moment where a club is able to agree a fee with us. We’re just focused on the short term at the minute, trying to make sure that the team is as cohesive as possible. We have to try to navigate these remaining 16 games in the best possible way, and Tommy can have a massive impact on that for us.”

NO REPLACEMENT
“Over the last season, Tommy’s worked himself to be one of two wide-left options in our squad. There’s him and Romaine (Mundle), you can’t let one of those players leave without finding a suitable replacement. That’s part of our thinking. There’s a trading element within the business of football, which is, ‘If you’re going to trade this player, what other opportunities does that present for you as a club?’ We look at all those things within it, and that’s ultimately part of the decision-making process as to whether you an accept an offer or not, and whether at a specific moment, you think that offer is the right value to enable you to do something else, or whether you want to hold to a future window. We’re really comfortable from a club perspective, and I think the player is really comfortable too because he recognises how good an opportunity Sunderland is at the minute, and he’s fully committed.”
