Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

Big few days for the club tbh.

I expected us to really go and bring in 2 or 3 quality additions to have a go at promotion and so far we've managed 1. Seems like they don't want to spend any money upfront in fees atm and are into this obligation of promoted stuff that isn't very attractive to clubs.

Losing Watson would be another kick in the balls really for what will inevitably be a low fee. Feels like the club are once again worried about a contract running down and getting less money for players.
and this is shite anarl.......

Watson signed the same length contract rigg did. 3 years is the maximum at 17.

Yes that's fine, but Watson wasn't playing in the first team at the time. He could have extended his contract, seen the season out and then considered his options.

Am I the only one who doesn't see the massive doom on this one?

There's only 3 years between him and Mundle and personally, as things stand, I don't see him starting games ahead of Mundle if/when both are fit and he looks a little bit away from that sort of level at the minute.

No doubt he'll go on to have a good career and he looks an excellent talent, but if we can get a decent fee for a player who has 18 months left on his deal and is likely to be second choice in his own position behind a player who is only 3 years older than him, I don't see a massive issue.

I'd love to keep him don't get me wrong, but sometimes you have to pick your battles. The kid probably doesn't even know if he'll ever be first choice ahead of Mundle here currently.
Alternative view is that ideally you want two top level in each position. The fact we have that isn't a reason to start dismantling the squad.

with two current injuries in that position, I might argue that we've struggled with the balance of the team - so to reduce us to just one first team ready LW is just asking to have the same issue in the future

He's only had a few appearances in the first time.

Got to be honest, it's shite from Watson, we've invested the time and money into developing him, he's not signed a new contract and has jumped at the first opportunity.

Fair play to players like Rigg who at least have repaid the club by committing for a few years.
He wants to play and feels he’s good enough but not getting the game time
While we have a chance of promotion we absolutely keep him till summer at least, Watson is better player than Mundle IMO. Dan Neil only has 18 month left on contract, are you selling him as well?
id imagine if a big enough offer comes in for Neil we might be tempted

All he's said is there's been discussions but we're reluctant to sell. The sky's not exactly falling, is it?

If it's only £10-20m it's a poor deal imo. This lad is going to be quality.

That said, Mundle would probably get in the side ahead of him if both fit.

Brutal to lose a clearly talented player but if he's not going to sign a new deal and a move to the premier league is offered I don't think the club have much of a leg to stand on
